Amazon to bring palm payment technology to all Whole Foods stores in the US

The e-commerce giant Amazon is set to roll out its palm payment technology, called Amazon One, to all of its Whole Foods stores in the US by the end of 2023. The technology allows customers to pay for their purchases by simply waving their hand over a scanning device, without the need for a wallet or a phone.

Amazon One was first introduced in 2020 at some of Amazon's own stores, such as Amazon Go and Amazon Books. Since then, the company has expanded the technology to about 200 Whole Foods locations, as well as other venues such as Panera Bread, Coors Field and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Amazon said it has recorded over 3 million uses of Amazon One so far.

To use Amazon One, customers have to enroll their palm print and link it to a credit card or an Amazon account. They can then scan their palm at any Amazon One device to enter and pay at participating stores. Customers who are also Prime members can get discounts and rewards when they use Amazon One at Whole Foods.

Amazon said that Amazon One is a fast, convenient and secure way to shop. The company claimed that it uses custom-built algorithms and hardware to create a unique palm signature for each user, and that it encrypts and stores the palm data in a secure cloud. Customers can also delete their palm data at any time through the Amazon website or by asking a customer service associate.

The expansion of Amazon One to all Whole Foods stores is a sign of Amazon's continued investment in contactless payments. The company is also rolling out its Just Walk Out technology to more Whole Foods stores. Just Walk Out allows customers to shop without having to scan their items or wait in line at checkout. Overall, Amazon One is a convenient and secure payment method that has the potential to make shopping at Whole Foods faster and easier.
