Amazon Changes Prime Eligibility Criteria in EU

Amazon Changes Prime Eligibility Criteria in EU

Amazon has announced that it will update its Prime eligibility and badge criteria, as well as its Buy Box offer display, across the EU starting from June 21, 2023. The changes are a result of an agreement that Amazon reached with the European Commission to ensure fair competition and customer satisfaction on its platform.

The new update will affect sellers in Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Belgium, who sell their products through various fulfilment channels, such as Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM), and Amazon retail. The main change is that all offers from sellers will be subject to the same Prime eligibility and badge criteria, regardless of their fulfilment channel.

This means that sellers who want to enrol into the Prime program or maintain their Prime status must meet the requirements based on the expectations of Prime customers. These include offering fast and reliable delivery, easy customer returns, excellent customer service and package tracking. The Prime badge will be displayed on the offers that meet these criteria, signalling to customers that they can enjoy free and fast shipping.

However, this also means that sellers who use FBA or Seller Fulfilled Prime (SFP) will no longer have an edge over merchant fulfilled sellers in terms of winning the Buy Box or getting better placement on the Amazon store. The Buy Box offer display will now be based on factors such as price, availability, delivery speed, and customer feedback. Therefore, sellers who use FBA or SFP may need to adjust their pricing and inventory strategies to remain competitive and profitable.

The update is expected to have a significant impact on the EU e-commerce market, as it could potentially increase the sales and visibility of merchant fulfilled sellers who offer high-quality service and delivery. It could also encourage more sellers to join the Prime program and improve their performance and metrics. However, it could also pose some challenges for sellers who rely on FBA or SFP to fulfil their orders and attract customers.
