Amazon changes same-day delivery policy for Prime members in the UK

Amazon has announced that its Prime members in the UK will have to pay an extra fee for same-day delivery on orders below £20. The new charge of £1.99 will apply from September 18, 2023, and will affect more than a million items that are currently eligible for same-day delivery. Non-Prime members will continue to pay £5.99 for the same service.

The move is part of Amazon's efforts to constantly innovate and deliver a wide selection of products at the fastest speeds, according to a spokesperson. Prime members will still enjoy free one-day delivery on orders over £20, as well as other benefits such as unlimited streaming of movies, TV shows and music, access to exclusive deals and discounts, and more.

Amazon Prime is a subscription service that costs £95 per year or £8.99 per month in the UK. It has over 200 million members worldwide and is one of the main drivers of Amazon's revenue and growth. However, it also entails high costs for the company, especially in terms of logistics and delivery. Amazon has invested billions of pounds in expanding its network of warehouses, delivery vans and drivers in the UK and other markets.

Some analysts have suggested that the new fee for same-day delivery is a way for Amazon to offset some of these costs and increase its profitability. Others have argued that it is a strategy to encourage customers to spend more on each order or to switch to other delivery options that are cheaper or more convenient for Amazon.

Amazon said it will notify its customers about the change via email and on its website. It also said it will continue to offer free same-day delivery on orders over £20 for Prime members in selected areas. Customers can check the availability of same-day delivery by entering their postcode on Amazon's website or app.
