Amazon Deploys AI to Spot Damaged Products

Amazon is using artificial intelligence (AI) to spot and prevent damaged goods from reaching its customers. The company has implemented the new technology at two of its fulfillment centers and plans to add it to 10 more locations in the US and Europe, reports WSJ. Not only Amazon, Walmart is also working to increase the automation capabilities of its fulfillment centers across the US.

The AI technology works by scanning products placed into bins to check for any signs of wear and tear, such as scratches, dents, or tears. If a product is identified as potentially damaged, it will be physically examined by an Amazon worker who will make the final decision as whether it can be shipped or should be moved to faulty stock.

According to news reports, the AI system is three times more likely to spot damaged goods than a human worker. The system was trained by comparing images of products that were not damaged to ones that were, and learning how to identify common visual features for broken items.

Amazon expects the AI technology to reduce the number of damaged items moving through its fulfillment centers and to speed up deliveries. The company says that fewer than one in 1,000 products are damaged, but with billions of packages shipped every year, the number of botched items is significant.

The use of AI technology is part of Amazon’s efforts to automate and optimize its operations and to improve customer satisfaction. The company has also deployed robots, drones, and voice assistants to assist with various tasks, such as lifting and moving heavy objects, delivering packages, or answering queries.

The company has recently inaugurated its largest facility in New England, a 3.8 million square foot fulfillment center in Windsor, Conn. that employs robotics technology. Additionally, the company has launched robotics fulfillment centers in Fort Wayne, Ind. and Papillion, Neb. in April and January respectively.
