Amazon Expands Same Day Delivery in the US

Leading online retailers in the US are expanding their same-day delivery networks to stay ahead in the highly competitive market. Amazon is also expanding its network by increasing the number of ‘smaller than traditional’ fulfillment centers.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Amazon has increased its investment in ultrafast delivery networks to offer same-day delivery to Prime members. The company has opened over 50 "same-day sites" in the United States since 2019 and plans to open dozens more this year. According to MWPVL International Inc, which monitors Amazon warehouse operations, Amazon has opened about 45 of the sites in the last four years and could expand to at least 150 in the next several years.

Amazon’s ultrafast delivery strategy includes a network of smaller warehouses called “same-day sites” that prepare products for immediate delivery. These facilities are much smaller than Amazon’s larger fulfillment warehouses. The smaller warehouses are designed to expedite the final stage of shipping. These same-day sites are located closer to urban areas. These smaller fulfillment sites are helping Amazon to offer same-day delivery for millions of items. Customers in cities such as Phoenix, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Orlando can now receive up to 3 million items more quickly through same-day delivery.

An Amazon spokesman told the WSJ, “We’re always exploring ways to bring our customers new levels of convenience and delivery options that work best for them. Same-Day Delivery is one of the latest innovations,” He added that above 1.5 million customers a month are trying same-day delivery for the first time.

Notably, Amazon's expansion of ultrafast delivery comes as it faces slowing growth in its e-commerce business and rising competition from other retailers, who have also invested in fast and convenient delivery options. In addition to its same-day sites, Amazon also operates other physical stores such as Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh which use “just walk out” technology that allows customers to shop without checking out.
