Amazon Halts the Construction of HQ2

Amid cost-cutting efforts, tech giant Amazon has decided to halt the construction of its second headquarter HQ2, in Arlington, Virginia. The company has officially confirmed the decision to CNN. The decision comes just two months after the company announced laying off more than 18,000 employees.

John Schoettler, Amazon’s head of Real Estate, told CNN that the groundbreaking for the second phase of the new headquarter HQ2 will be delayed. The first phase is under construction and scheduled to open in June. He added that the company has already hired around 8,000 employees at the new headquarters and is excited to welcome them to the first phase of the new campus this June.

He told CBS News that the company is always evaluating space plans to make sure they fit its business needs. ‘’Since Met Park will have space to accommodate more than 14,000 employees, we've decided to shift the groundbreaking of PenPlace (the second phase of HQ2) out a bit," He added.

Amazon has one headquarter in Seattle, Washington and it is building a second headquarter in Arlington, Virginia.

Despite the temporary pause in construction, Amazon has confirmed that it remains committed to its second headquarters, which plans to hire 25,000 workers and spend $2.5 billion. The company has already hired around 8,000 workers for the first phase.
