Amazon Introduces New Tool to Prove EU EPR Batteries Compliance

Amazon has released an important update for European sellers dealing with batteries. Announced on Seller Central, this update allows merchants to easily prove their compliance with the European Union’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements for batteries. The new feature aims to help sellers streamline the process of registering, reporting, and paying eco-contribution fees, ensuring that they meet evolving environmental regulations and avoid offer deactivations.

The EU Batteries Regulation
The EU’s Batteries Regulation, set to take full effect by August 18, 2025, is designed to enhance sustainability and proper waste management of batteries. Under these rules, producers must register their batteries or products containing batteries with local authorities or approved organizations in multiple European countries. This ensures batteries are managed responsibly from their production through take-back, recycling, and final disposal.

Why This Matters to Amazon Sellers
Complying with the EU Batteries Regulation is essential for sellers who list battery-powered products in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and possibly more EU nations. Without valid registration numbers, sellers risk having their listings suspended once the regulations kick in. By following Amazon’s step-by-step approach and using the Account Health page to provide the required details, sellers can confirm compliance and keep their offers active.

Key Steps to Achieve Compliance
1. Register with Local Authorities or PROs: Sellers need to register their batteries with the relevant EU authorities or through a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO). Countries like Germany, Sweden, and Poland require direct local authority registration, while the Netherlands involves working through a PRO.

2. Submit Registration Numbers via Account Health: Once sellers have their registration numbers, they should submit them through their Seller Central Account Health page under the Regulatory Compliance section. According to Amazon’s latest update, validation of these numbers takes about five business days.

3. Fulfill Annual Reporting and Payment Requirements:
From August 2025 onwards, sellers will need to report their annual battery sales and pay necessary eco-contribution fees. Staying on top of these obligations ensures long-term compliance and avoids disruptions to product listings.

What About Other EU Countries?
For Italy, Spain, and Belgium, local authorities have yet to confirm whether sellers must register independently or if Amazon’s Pay on Behalf service is applicable. Amazon promises updates as soon as these details become clear. In France, sellers can already enroll in Amazon’s Pay on Behalf service, streamlining the entire compliance process for that market.

Not a Direct Producer?
If a seller is not the actual producer of the batteries, they can still comply. They must obtain registration details from their upstream suppliers and follow the same steps to submit this information on their Account Health page, confirming their non-producer status.

Amazon’s newly introduced tool for proving EU EPR Batteries compliance simplifies a potentially complicated process. By offering a centralized location on the Account Health page for submitting, validating, and tracking compliance documentation, Amazon is helping sellers adapt to stricter environmental regulations and maintain their listings. With deadlines approaching and more details expected from additional EU nations, staying informed and proactive will ensure that Amazon sellers remain fully compliant and ready for future changes in the European market.
