Amazon Invests $200M in Transportation Safety

Amazon is planning huge investments to make its transportation network safe. The company has announced investments to the tune of $200M in advanced and innovative safety tech in 2023 for its transportation network.

In an official statement, the company said that safety is integral to all of its operations and it is striving to ensure the well-being of its drivers and customers. The company is working to achieve the goals marked in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) for road safety.

Udit Madan, Vice President of Amazon Transportation said, ‘’ It’s our belief that the technology we create, along with innovations spearheaded by our industry partners can raise the bar on safety and reduce crash frequency and severity. And in many cases, these innovations are better for the environment too.’’

The company has added leading safety technology to its middle-mile trucking network, which transports packages between its operations sites. The technology includes features like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and speed limiters.

Amazon is expanding its in-vehicle camera safety technology across its last-mile delivery network, which delivers packages to customers. The technology detects safety events and sends real-time alerts. It has helped reduce accident rates by 35 per cent across Amazon’s network. The company aims to install this tech in almost all branded vehicles by April 2023.

The company is also experimenting with new technologies in the transportation space. For example, it uses strobing brake light technology in some of its trailers to make them more visible when braking. This technology could reduce rear-end collisions by up to 30 per cent. The company plans to deploy a new safety feature in its trucking fleet that uses digital side mirror camera technology to reduce blind spots and improve the safety of its trucks.

What is NRSS:
NRSS stands for the National Roadway Safety Strategy, a comprehensive approach to significantly reducing highway fatalities and serious injuries. NRSS is administered by the United States Department of Transportation. The goal of the NRSS is to create a safe and equitable transportation system. The NRSS comprises eight elements that reflect the Department's commitment to ensuring the safety of all roadway users. These elements include data-driven safety analysis, safety performance measures, safety countermeasures, safety culture and training, public engagement, safety technology, law enforcement, and infrastructure improvements.
