Amazon Issues Update for Sellers on UK's 3G Network Switch-Off
Amazon UK Sellers Urged to Review 3G Device Listings
Amazon has issued an important update on its Seller Central platform, informing UK sellers about the ongoing phase-out of 3G networks across the country. As mobile network operators shift their focus towards expanding 4G and 5G services, Amazon is urging sellers to update their listings for 3G-only devices to ensure compliance with the new network realities.
The transition towards 4G and 5G services will provide customers with better, faster and more reliable mobile services. However, it will impact devices that rely solely on 3G connectivity. If you sell such devices, it's important to update your product listings to comply with official guidance and ensure customers are well-informed.

Gradual 3G Network Shutdown Across the UK
The UK's mobile infrastructure currently operates on four generations of technology: 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G. However, the gradual shutdown of 3G services has already begun, with network operators making room for the more advanced 4G and 5G networks. This change is intended to provide customers with better, faster, and more reliable mobile services. Although the current shutdown only affects 3G, 2G networks are expected to be phased out by 2033.
Key Points to Consider
1. Clearly state which mobile networks the device can use in the product description. Avoid referring to 3G as a key or important feature, as it will no longer be available in the near future.
2. Provide information about the networks the device can access at the point of sale. This will help customers make an informed decision about purchasing a 3G-only device.
3. Review Ofcom's guidance on "Switching off the UK's 2G and 3G mobile networks" to ensure your listings comply with the regulator's requirements.
4. Stay updated on the 3G switch-off timeline for each MNO. EE and Vodafone have already completed their 3G network switch-offs, while Three expects to do so by the end of 2024 and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) plans to follow in 2025.
5. Be aware that the 3G switch-off will also impact other devices that rely on mobile networks, such as telecare alarms, security alarms, fire alarms, ATMs, and payment terminals.
The upcoming 3G switch-off presents both challenges and opportunities for Amazon sellers. By updating your 3G-only device listings and providing clear information to customers, you can help ensure a smooth transition during the UK's 3G network switch-off.
