Amazon's Largest-Ever Electric Truck Order Drives Greener Deliveries
Over 200 eHGVs to Transform Mid-Mile Transport and Cut Emissions
Amazon has taken a significant step toward greener deliveries by placing its largest-ever order of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The company plans to add more than 200 new Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks to its fleet in the UK, marking what is believed to be the country's most significant single eHGV order to date. This ambitious move is part of Amazon's ongoing commitment to reduce carbon emissions and reach net zero across its operations by 2040.
Amazon currently operates fewer electric trucks, but this significant investment will boost its eHGV count to over 160 vehicles over the next 18 months. Beyond the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 models, the company also adds Volvo FM Battery Electric trucks to its fleet. Once fully operational, these zero-exhaust emission vehicles will transport more than 350 million packages yearly by moving trailers between fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations across the UK and Germany.

Charging Infrastructure and High-Mileage Routes
A major challenge in deploying electric trucks is the need for reliable and speedy charging facilities. In response, Amazon will install 360kW electric charging points at key sites, allowing the 40-tonne trucks to charge from 20 to 80 percent in just over an hour. This rapid-charging capability is vital for keeping vehicles on the road along Amazon's high-mileage middle-mile network. Additionally, the company is actively collaborating with stakeholders to establish more charging points at external sites, enabling longer journeys and further expanding the reach of electric vehicles.
Complementary Initiatives
Amazon's focus on lowering emissions goes beyond road transport. The company is harnessing the UK's electric rail network for bulk shipping packages, using the West Coast Main Line to move products between Scotland and the Midlands. This approach is expected to transport over 20 million items by rail this year. Meanwhile, Amazon is also experimenting with on-foot deliveries in central London. Delivery associates in busy areas now use carts restocked from nearby vans, minimizing the reliance on traditional vans or trucks.
According to Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Operations Sustainability: "This order of more than 200 electric trucks underlines our commitment to being a leader in electrifying heavy goods transportation in Europe. It is the biggest electric heavy truck order by Amazon to date anywhere in the world, and is an important step as we work to achieve our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040. We look forward to sharing our learnings, and will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to support the transition to more electric heavy goods vehicles on European roads, and so more efficient and lower-emission deliveries for Amazon's customers."
Path to Net-Zero
Amazon's drive toward sustainability includes a £300 million investment in green transport solutions in the UK alone. By embracing electric HGVs, rail transport, and innovative last-mile strategies, the company is actively shrinking its environmental footprint and setting an example for the broader logistics industry.
With over 200 new electric trucks rolling onto roads later this year, Amazon is poised to impact how goods are delivered across the UK and beyond. The combination of modern charging infrastructure, rail transport, and innovative on-foot deliveries underscores the company's multi-pronged approach to cutting emissions. By leading the charge toward zero-emission logistics, Amazon continues to push the boundaries of sustainable transportation and set new standards for the e-commerce sector.
