South African entrepreneurs to access tools and support to grow their businesses

As announced in October 2023, tech giant Amazon officially launched its dedicated online store for South Africa, bringing a tailored e-commerce experience to its consumers. The new Amazon.co.za store, accessible via web browsers and the Amazon Shopping App, offers a diverse selection of both local and international brands across 20 product categories.
The much awaited launch was announced in an official announcement by the company.
Customers in South Africa can now enjoy competitive prices, same-day and next-day delivery options, and the convenience of free delivery on first orders and subsequent purchases over R500 (approximately $27) for Amazon-fulfilled products. The store features popular global brands such as Apple, Sony, and LEGO, alongside homegrown favorites from independent South African sellers.
"We are excited to launch Amazon.co.za, along with thousands of independent sellers in South Africa," said Robert Koen, managing director of Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon. "We provide customers with great value, broad selection—including international and local products—and a convenient delivery experience."
Amazon has teamed up with goGOGOgo, a South African non-profit organization, to offer gift packaging in handmade bags crafted by local grandmothers. This initiative aims to support income generation opportunities for these women who are raising children across the country.
The launch of Amazon.co.za also presents new opportunities for South African businesses. Over 60% of items sold on Amazon's global stores come from small and medium-sized sellers. Local entrepreneurs will have access to tools and support to grow their businesses and reach a wider customer base.
Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, South Africa's Minister of Small Business Development, welcomed Amazon's entry, stating, "We are counting on Amazon to provide such opportunities to our small enterprises, and look forward to working together to unlock these opportunities. This will create jobs and contribute to government's objective of repairing the legacy of poverty and inequality."
As Amazon continues to enhance its offerings in South Africa, customers can expect a constantly evolving shopping experience that prioritizes value, convenience, and support for local businesses.
