High-value item exemption removed as Seller Central moves to faster, standardised return processing

Amazon has announced a major change to its seller-fulfilled returns policy, requiring all US sellers to use prepaid return labels for customer returns, including high-value items. The update, announced on Seller Central, removes the earlier exemption that allowed sellers to handle expensive item returns differently. The move is aimed at creating a faster, more consistent return experience for buyers while reducing operational friction for sellers.

What has changed from February 8
Effective February 8, 2026, US sellers must enrol eligible products in the Amazon Prepaid Return Label program, regardless of item value. Earlier, sellers could opt out of prepaid labels for high-value items, but that option will no longer be available. Amazon says the uniform rule will simplify returns and speed up refunds.

How the prepaid return label system works
Under the Amazon Prepaid Return Label program, customers automatically receive a prepaid return shipping label generated through Buy Shipping Services. Buyers no longer need to contact sellers to request return instructions or shipping details. Once the return is scanned by the carrier, the refund process begins automatically.

Faster refunds and fewer disputes
One of the key benefits highlighted in the Seller Central announcement is faster refund processing. The standard refund timeline is expected to reduce from 14 days to around 7 days. With fewer buyer-seller messages involved, Amazon expects a drop in return-related disputes and customer service tickets.

Categories that remain exempt
Amazon clarified that existing category exemptions will continue to apply. These include Handmade products, certified pre-owned watches, non-physical items such as digital products, dangerous goods, and extra-large or heavy items. Products that are technically ineligible for prepaid return labels will also remain exempt from the requirement.

Protection for sellers in case of losses
To address seller concerns around misuse or damage during returns, Amazon reminded sellers about the Seller Assurance for E-Commerce Transactions, commonly known as the SAFE-T program. If a seller believes a refund was issued unfairly or the returned item was damaged or incomplete, they can submit a claim for reimbursement through Seller Central for seller-fulfilled orders.

What sellers should do now
Sellers are advised to review their return settings in Seller Central and ensure all eligible listings are aligned with the prepaid return label requirement. It is also important to factor return shipping costs into pricing strategies, especially for high-value products. Keeping proper documentation and photos can help in case a SAFE-T claim is needed later.

By removing the high-value exemption and making prepaid return labels mandatory, Amazon is pushing for a more automated and buyer-friendly return process. While the change may increase upfront return handling costs for some sellers, faster refunds, fewer disputes, and access to SAFE-T reimbursements are expected to balance the impact. Sellers who adapt early and update their workflows on Seller Central are likely to benefit most from the streamlined system.
