Amazon has announced an important change to its Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) inventory reimbursement policy, set to take effect on March 10, 2025. This update, clarified on December 19, 2024, revolves around how reimbursements are determined for items lost or damaged before a customer order is placed. The central focus is on the concept of Manufacturing Cost. This new definition is meant to provide a more transparent, predictable, and fair way for Amazon sellers to receive compensation for lost or damaged inventory. Understanding these changes can help sellers better control their costs, gain clarity on reimbursement amounts, and ultimately make informed decisions about their business operations.

What Is Manufacturing Cost?
Manufacturing cost refers to the direct amount you pay to produce or acquire your product before it reaches Amazon’s fulfillment centers. It focuses solely on the item’s base value, making the reimbursement process more transparent and predictable. Unlike previous approaches, this definition helps ensure you’re compensated fairly for losses before a customer places an order.

Key details include:
Core Expense Only: Manufacturing cost covers the payment you make to a manufacturer, wholesaler, or reseller. If you produce the items yourself, it represents your direct production expenses.
No Extra Add-Ons: It does not include additional fees like shipping, handling, customs, or other charges that do not directly relate to producing the item.
Increased Accuracy: By centering on the core product cost, Amazon aims to provide a transparent and easy-to-understand reimbursement figure. This prevents confusion and ensures that your compensation reflects the product’s actual value.

Why This Matters to Sellers
This new approach to determining reimbursements helps ensure you are compensated fairly and consistently. No longer will reimbursements fluctuate due to variations in fees that are not directly tied to a product’s creation. Instead, the focus remains on the item’s inherent value. This gives you a more accurate reflection of your actual loss when items are damaged or go missing before a customer places an order.

Greater Transparency and Control
Under the updated policy, Amazon will provide a manufacturing cost estimate for your items. This estimate comes from examining various comparable products sold by Amazon and other merchants. If you believe Amazon’s estimate does not accurately reflect your true manufacturing costs, you can easily submit your own figures. This is a welcome change because it allows you to ensure the reimbursement amounts align closely with your real expenses, thus giving you greater control over the entire process.

Preparing for the Changes
Starting in late January, Amazon will introduce a new “Manage Your Manufacturing Cost” page within the Inventory Defect and Reimbursement portal. Sellers can use this page to view Amazon’s manufacturing cost estimates, enter their own costs, and make adjustments as needed. By planning ahead, you can have your manufacturing costs ready to go well before the March 10 deadline, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.

These changes to Amazon’s FBA reimbursement policy mark a step toward greater fairness, clarity, and predictability. By focusing on the core concept of manufacturing cost, Amazon gives sellers the tools they need to understand their potential reimbursements more clearly. Taking advantage of the new portal, proactively reviewing your manufacturing costs, and staying informed will help you confidently navigate these updates and ensure your business remains competitive in the evolving e-commerce landscape.
