Amazon Reveals Active User Data in EU
Amazon and other tech giants have revealed their monthly active user data in the EU to comply with EU's strict Digital Services Act (DSA) for policing internet content. The deadline to submit the data under this much debated EU law ended on 17th Feb, 2023.
The law which came into force on 16 November, 2022 aims to crack down on illegal online content. Some of the areas under its purview are: protection of minors, countering online sale of unsafe goods and boosting transparency around internet services. It also empowers users with more choices and information when they use the internet in the European Union.
The new EU law categorizes the big tech companies as ‘Very Large Online Platform’ (VLOP) or as ‘Very Large Online Search Engine’ (VLOSE) depending upon their user base. The platforms with greater than 45 million monthly active users fall under this category. Amazon falls under VLOP as its monthly active user bases surpasses the minimum threshold, as announced by the company.
Following the deadline, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Apple Store, Alibaba and many other online platforms have also announced monthly active user data in the EU, reports Reuters.
Amazon said it had more than 45 million users in the EU, while Microsoft’s Bing search engine has 107 million average monthly users. AliExpress said its average monthly active users in the EU is above 45 million, TikTok has 100.9 million average monthly users in the EU. Meta Platforms (META.O) tops the chart with maximum number of monthly active users in the EU - 255 million on Facebook and about 250 million on Instagram. eBay said it was below the EU user threshold.
As per DSA, VLOP or VLOSE companies will have to report user numbers every six months. Under this law, VLOP or VLOSE platforms must issue annual audits and say what measures they are implementing to stop illegal content. The law empowers the commission to order them to explain their algorithms too. Companies which don’t abide by the law will be fined up to six percent of their global annual revenues.
