Amazon Puts Fake Reviewers Under Strict Scanner

Amazon and other major online retailers have been battling fake or manipulated reviews on their platforms for some time. Despite significant efforts to check fake reviews, some bad actors are still engaged in paid reviews which negatively impact both Amazon as well as third party sellers selling on its platform.

Fake reviews can be highly effective in boosting a product’s ratings and increasing the number of reviews it receives. However, fake reviews can also hurt consumers by misleading them into purchasing products that may not meet their expectations. This can lead to loss of trust in Amazon and also in the sellers on the platform.

These fake reviewers actively solicit paid reviews on most popular social media platforms making it extremely difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

In a statement, Amazon reaffirmed its committment to combat such malicious practices. David Montague, Amazon's Vice President of Selling Partner Risk, said, "We want Amazon customers to shop with confidence, knowing that the reviews they see are authentic and trustworthy." He added, "Amazon is targeting the source of the problem and sending a clear message that we will hold bad actors, including fake review brokers, accountable."

It is interesting to note that Amazon introduced product reviews way back in 1995 to help customers make more informed shopping decisions. The company aims to ensure that every review on its site is trustworthy and reflects an actual customer experience. With around 12,000 employees worldwide dedicated to protecting its platform from fake reviews, the company has stepped up its efforts to combat fake reviewers by taking legal action against them.

As part of its latest legal efforts to combat fake reviews, Amazon filed lawsuits against six defendants in February 2023. The company has also filed criminal complaints in Italy and civil suits in Spain to shut down fake product reviews. In 2022 alone, Amazon filed legal suits against over 90 bad actors who were found to be involved in fake reviews.
