Amazon Relaunches Ground Shipping Service for Sellers

Amazon has relaunched its ground shipping service for sellers, allowing them to deliver orders made through Amazon and other online platforms in two to five business days. The service, called Amazon Shipping, was paused in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but has now resumed operations with a wider reach and lower fees. Amazon Shipping delivers packages up to 50 pounds for Amazon sellers in two to five business days, weekends included.

Amazon Shipping covers domestic shipments within the contiguous U.S., tapping into the U.S. Postal Service for the final mile delivery. Unlike FedEx and UPS, Amazon does not charge residential fees or weekend delivery charges, making it more attractive for sellers who want to save on shipping costs. However, Amazon did not disclose the shipping rates on its website, and the service is only available for sellers who sell on Amazon.

Amazon spokesperson Olivia Connors said, “We’re always working to develop new, innovative ways to support Amazon’s selling partners, and Amazon Shipping is another option for shipping packages to customers quickly and cost-effectively. We’ve been providing this service for a while with positive feedback so we’re now making it available to more selling partners,”

The relaunch of Amazon Shipping comes as the company has expanded its fulfillment network and delivery speed. Amazon has also invested in specialized warehouses, called same-day sites, that are located closer to urban areas and customers, and can handle orders for same-day or next-day delivery.

As its own network has grown, Amazon has reduced its dependence on UPS for delivering many of its customer orders. The company’s in-house delivery arm surpassed FedEx in shipping 4.8 billion parcels in the U.S. last year, according to the Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index.

“More than 60% of sales in the Amazon store come from independent sellers, and in 2022, U.S.-based sellers sold more than 4.1 billion items to customers worldwide, averaging more than $230,000 in sales in the Amazon store,”  said Dharmesh Mehta, VP of Worldwide Selling Partner Services, in an official blog.

By offering its ground shipping service to sellers who sell on other sites, Amazon is aiming to leverage its delivery network and compete with FedEx and UPS, which have seen a surge in demand during the pandemic.
