Amazon Slashes 9,000 More Jobs, Announces CEO
Amazon has announced that it will lay off another 9,000 employees in the coming weeks, adding to the 18,000 job cuts it disclosed earlier this year. The company's CEO Andy Jassy said in a memo to staff on Monday that the layoffs were part of the company's second phase of annual operating plan (referred to internally as ''OP2'') which concluded the past week. The company wants to make the planning process leaner and more efficient in the uncertain economy and future.
He said that some of the company's businesses had added a significant amount of headcount in previous years. Still, given the current macroeconomic environment, user and revenue growth not meeting expectations, they had to make some difficult decisions.
The latest layoffs will primarily affect employees in Amazon's cloud computing unit AWS, its advertising division, its human resources department PXT and its live streaming platform Twitch.
Jassy explained that some teams were not done with their cost-cutting analysis until recently, which is why they did not announce these role reductions with the ones they announced a couple of months ago. He said they wanted to share these decisions as soon as possible so that people had the needed information.
While Amazon aims to operate leaner this year, Jassy said he remains optimistic about the company's most prominent businesses, retail and AWS and other new divisions where the company continues investing.
