Amazon to Charge $1 for UPS Returns

Amazon to Charge $1 for UPS Returns

Online shoppers who want to return their Amazon purchases to a UPS store may have to pay a small fee starting this month. Amazon has introduced a new policy that charges customers $1 if they choose to return items to a UPS store instead of a nearby drop-off location such as Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, or Kohl's which are subsidiaries of the company.

The new fee is part of Amazon's effort to reduce its carbon footprint and encourage customers to use drop-off locations that are more convenient and environmentally friendly. According to Amazon, drop-off locations are located within 5 miles of most customers and offer faster refunds and free packaging. Customers can also choose to print a prepaid label and ship their returns from any location.

Amazon says that the fee will only apply to a small percentage of returns and that customers will be notified before they complete their return process. The fee will not apply to items that are damaged, defective, or incorrect. Amazon Prime members or the customers who have an Amazon credit card will also be exempted from the $1 fee.

"We always offer a free option for customers to return their item.If a customer would prefer to return their item at a UPS Store when there is a free option closer to their delivery address, a very small amount of customers may incur a $1 fee" said Steve Kelly, Amazon spokesperson to Insider in an email.

Amazon is the largest online retailers which handles millions of returns every year which cost a lot. Returns are a huge expense for companies, especially online retailers like Amazon. In 2021, customers returned $761 billion worth of goods with online purchases having a 21% return rate.
