Amazon to Close Book Depository

Amazon to Close Book Depository

Amazon has announced that it will close its UK-based online store Book Depository by the end of this month. The move will affect millions of customers who rely on Book Depository for free worldwide delivery of books.

Book Depository was founded in 2004 by former Amazon employee Andrew Crawford and his business partner Stuart Felton. It quickly became known for its large inventory of books and free delivery worldwide and acquired by Amazon in 2011.

The company runs offices in London, Gloucester, Madrid, Cape Town and Chennai with fulfillment centers in the UK and Australia.

The company told customers that it will cease operations on April 26 after 13 years of trading.

Book Depository website displays a pop-up message to users, ‘’We are sorry to let you know that Book Depository will be closing on 26 April 2023. You can still place orders until midday (12pm BST) on 26 April 2023 and we will continue to deliver your purchases and provide support for any order issues until 23 June 2023. From all of us at Book Depository we want to say "thank you". Delivering your favorite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure.’’

However, some customers and industry experts have expressed disappointment and concern over the decision.

They fear that it will reduce competition and choice in the book market, especially for international customers who may face higher shipping costs and longer delivery times from Amazon.
