Amazon to create 2,000 jobs at new fulfilment centre in Britain
The e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will create 2,000 new permanent jobs at a new fulfilment centre in Britain, located at Wynyard Park, near Stockton-on-Tees in north east of the country. The 464,000 sq ft site, which is located off the A19, is due to open in October 2023.
This is the fourth fulfilment centre of Amazon’s Northeast hubs, following the opening of centres in Darlington in May 2020, Durham in September 2020 and Gateshead in September 2021.
The new building will feature three floors of Amazon Robotics technology, which will help the company to handle customer orders more efficiently and safely. The robots will move around the warehouse and pick up items from shelves and bring them to human workers, who will then pack and ship them to customers.
Amazon said that the new jobs will include engineers, HR and IT professionals, health and safety and finance specialists, as well as operations managers. The company also said that it will provide training and career development opportunities for its employees.
Amazon's UK country manager John Boumphrey said: "We're delighted to be expanding our operations in the North East with this new fulfilment centre in Wynyard Park, creating 2,000 permanent roles with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one." He added, "Our expansion across the UK is a testament to the customer demand for our products and services. We are proud to be creating new jobs across the country with great working conditions and a culture of innovation."
Marianna Desai, Amazon’s regional director, said: “I look forward to recruiting talented individuals in a diverse range of roles, from engineers and IT professionals through to the teams who will handle customer orders.”
The new fulfilment centre is part of Amazon's ongoing investment in the UK, where it has created more than 55,000 jobs since 2010. The company has also invested more than £32 billion in its UK operations since 2010.
