Amazon to double its same-day delivery network in the US

Amazon announced on Monday that it will invest in expanding its same-day delivery network across the US, aiming to double the number of facilities that can offer this service in the next few years.

The e-commerce giant said that more than half of all orders placed by Prime subscribers in the top 60 largest metros in the US arrived on the same or the next day during the second quarter of 2023, and that it has delivered more than 1.8 billion products to Prime members with same-day or one-day delivery so far this year, a fourfold increase from 2019.

The company did not disclose how many same-day facilities it currently has, but according to some news reports, the figure is around 50. These facilities are smaller and closer to major population centers than Amazon's bigger warehouses, which are located near highways on the outskirts of big cities.

"These hybrid facilities allow us to fulfill, sort and deliver all from one site, making the entire process of delivering customer packages even faster. Amazon selection varies by city, as we regularly update our product offering based on what we're seeing as top customer items purchased or based on seasonal demand in the area", said Doug Herrington, Amazon's Worldwide Stores chief, in a blog post. He added, ‘Same-Day Delivery is currently available on millions of items for customers across more than 90 U.S. metro areas, and we have plans to double the number of sites in the coming years.’

Amazon's move comes as it faces increasing competition from other retailers which have leveraged their physical stores as pickup locations for online orders, offering convenience and cost savings for customers and themselves.

Amazon's plan to double its same-day delivery network reflects its ambition to maintain its dominance in the online shopping market, which is expected to grow to $1.4 trillion by 2025, according to Insider Intelligence. The company hopes to offer fast and convenient delivery options to its Prime members, who pay $119 a year for perks like free shipping, streaming and discounts. However, the company also faces challenges from rising costs, slowing growth and increasing competition from rivals who are catching up with their own delivery innovations.
