Amazon to Join India’s ONDC Network
The e-commerce major Amazon on Friday announced that it will join the Indian Government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform. Amazon plans to integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce services with the platform. Amazon logistics include services from pickup to delivery. SmartCommerce is a suite of SaaS (software-as-a-service) products hosted on AWS that enables MSMEs in India to build and scale their business.
“We are excited about the opportunities to mobilise Amazon’s industry-leading infrastructure and technology, including logistics, and small business digitisation tools, to help the ONDC accelerate its objectives. We remain committed to being a catalyst for India’s digitisation efforts throughout the economy,” Manish Tiwary, Country Manager, India Consumer Business, Amazon India, said in a statement.
Amazon said that it will continue to explore potential opportunities for a stronger integration with the ONDC network. This will be Amazon’s maiden collaboration with ONDC. However, it will continue to explore other potential opportunities for stronger integration between the two.
T Koshy, Managing Director and Chief Executive of ONDC said, “We are happy that Amazon has a definite roadmap to being a part of the ONDC network and is taking its first step in coming in as the logistics partner in the ONDC network."
The ONDC platform allows any e-commerce business to tap into the ONDC platform to manage their catalog and fulfilment seamlessly. The ONDC platform is expected to revolutionize eCommerce in India just as UPI (Unified Payment Interface) has revolutionized digital payments.
In August 2022, ONDC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Small Industries and Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to onboard its huge ecosystem of MSMEs on the network. Several companies, including Microsoft, Meesho, Paytm, and Dunzo, have already joined the platform.

ONDC aims to increase e-commerce penetration in India to 25 per cent in the next two years, reaching 900 million buyers and 1.2 million sellers through the network and reaching the $48-billion mark in terms of the gross merchandise value.
