Amazon UK has announced a key update to its Value Added Tax Calculation Services for sellers in the UK and European marketplaces, changing how VAT is calculated on orders. According to an official update shared on Seller Central, VAT will be calculated at the shipment or invoice level instead of per unit, effective June 1, 2026, in line with evolving European e-invoicing mandates.

Shift from unit-level to invoice-level VAT
Under the current system, VAT is calculated on each individual unit sold. With the new approach, VAT will be calculated on the total invoice amount grouped by tax rate. This means that for orders containing multiple units, the total VAT amount may differ slightly from earlier calculations.

This change is designed to improve compliance with EU regulations and standardise invoicing practices across marketplaces.

How VAT will be calculated across sales channels
Amazon clarified that VAT treatment will vary depending on the sales channel used, regardless of whether the buyer is VAT-registered.

For consumer website orders, VAT will be calculated by extracting it from the VAT-inclusive price. In cases where multiple units are purchased, the VAT-exclusive price per unit may vary slightly due to rounding at the invoice level.

For Amazon Business website orders, the VAT-exclusive unit price will be derived first from the VAT-inclusive price. VAT will then be calculated on the total VAT-exclusive amount based on the applicable tax rate.

Impact on pricing and invoices
The move to shipment-level VAT calculation may lead to small differences in unit pricing displayed on invoices, especially in bulk purchases. However, the total VAT charged on the entire order will remain accurate and compliant with tax rules.

Sellers should be aware that these rounding differences are expected and are part of aligning with invoice-based taxation systems widely adopted across Europe.

What sellers should do now
Amazon has advised sellers to review their invoicing processes, accounting systems, and integrations to ensure compatibility with the new method. Sellers using third-party accounting or ERP tools may need to verify that their systems can handle invoice-level VAT calculations.

It is also important for sellers to familiarise themselves with updated VAT Calculation Services documentation available on Seller Central, including detailed examples under the invoice-total VAT calculation methodology.

Why this change matters
The update reflects a broader push across the European Union towards real-time digital invoicing and more consistent tax reporting. By shifting to shipment-level VAT calculations, Amazon aims to reduce discrepancies, improve audit accuracy, and simplify cross-border compliance for sellers.

Amazon’s transition to invoice-level VAT calculation marks an important regulatory and operational shift for UK and EU sellers. While the change may introduce minor differences in unit pricing on invoices, it ultimately brings greater alignment with European tax standards. Sellers who proactively update their systems and understand the new methodology will be better positioned to manage compliance smoothly and avoid disruptions in their business operations.
