Amazon UAE Deal to Boost Local Digital Economy

Amazon UAE Deal to Boost Local Digital Economy

Amazon has signed a new deal with the UAE government to showcase 100,000 new businesses from the UAE on its website by 2026. The deal, announced on Tuesday, is a part of Dubai’s vision to double the size of its economy by 2033 and become a global digital economy leader.

The move will open up the UAE to 300 million new customers and potential visitors, according to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai.

Sheikh Hamdan said on Twitter: “Dubai has positioned itself as a thriving center for the digital economy. I welcome Amazon’s plans to showcase 100,000 businesses, including local SMEs, on Amazon.ae by 2026. This initiative will grant Emirati companies a global platform, aligning with D33’s aspirations, and enabling further progress towards our shared goals.”

D33 is a strategy that aims to make Dubai a global digital economy leader, the fastest-growing and most attractive global business centre, and a preferred destination for major international companies and investments.

Amazon UAE was launched in 2019 as a rebranding of Souq.com, which Amazon acquired in 2017 for $580 million. The online retailer currently displays 50,000 local and international companies on its site and aims at least to double this figure over the next three years.

Ronaldo Mouchawar, Vice President of Amazon Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Tweets: “Amazon is honored by the support of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in enabling a thriving digital economy. Today, we host 50,000 businesses on our Amazon.ae store and plan to double this number to 100,000 businesses including local SMEs.”

The deal is expected to benefit both consumers and sellers in the UAE, as well as create new jobs and opportunities for the local workforce.
