Amazon unveils new mobile features to improve product search and discovery

In a relentless pursuit of enhancing the customer shopping experience, Amazon has unveiled five groundbreaking features aimed at simplifying the process of finding and purchasing products from their extensive inventory. From visual search to augmented reality visualization, here's a look at how Amazon is making shopping more convenient and user-friendly.

The new features include searching with a combination of images and text, visualizing products on tables and countertops, discovering popular products with sales trend information, searching with the sharing feature on mobile, and making it easier to reorder previous purchases. Let's have a look on these new features.

1. Visual Search Combining Images and Text
Topping the list of Amazon's recent improvements is a feature that caters to customers who aren't quite sure what they're searching for. Whether you need a replacement part for an appliance or simply can't put a name to what you're looking for, Amazon's visual search tool has you covered. Users can now snap a picture and add text to their search queries to narrow down results. For instance, if you need a dishwasher part but can't remember its name, you can take a photo and type in the brand ("Frigidaire") to refine your search.

2. Augmented Reality for Furniture and Home Decor
For those shopping for home items like furniture, lamps, or small appliances, Amazon's "View in Your Room" feature has been expanded to include tabletop products. Leveraging augmented reality, this mobile experience lets shoppers see how a product will fit and look in their living space. Wondering if that new coffee maker will fit on your kitchen countertop? "View in Your Room" allows you to visualize it in your own environment, even moving products around to assess the perfect fit.

3. Sales Trend Information for Informed Choices
To help customers stay up-to-date with product trends, Amazon has introduced sales trend data in search results and on product detail pages. This valuable information, such as "10K+ bought in the past month," gives shoppers insights into the recent popularity of products, complementing existing indicators like customer reviews and Best Seller status.

4. Effortless Product Search with Sharing Feature
Amazon recognizes that customers often stumble upon products they like while browsing online or engaging in conversations. To make it effortless to find these items on Amazon, they've introduced "Find-on-Amazon." When you spot a product you fancy anywhere on the web, simply tap the "Share" button, select the Amazon Shopping app, and click "Find products on Amazon." You'll be seamlessly directed to Amazon's app, where similar products await, eliminating the need to know specific product names or descriptions.

5. Simplified Reordering of Previous Purchases
Understanding the importance of reordering previously purchased items, Amazon has made this process even more straightforward. Once Amazon recognizes that you're searching for a previously bought product, it will prominently display the item at the top of your search results, complete with the date of your last purchase. Frequently reordered items will also feature a thumbnail image in the search bar, facilitating quick access to the product detail page and a hassle-free repurchase.

In an official blog, Llew Mason, Vice President of Shopping said, 'We are always testing new features and honing existing ones to see what works best to help customers in every phase of their shopping journey.'

These new features are part of Amazon's efforts to improve its mobile shopping experience and challenge other product search engines, like Google and Pinterest. Amazon claims that these features can benefit both sellers and customers, as well as enhance its position in the e-commerce and digital advertising markets.
