Amazon Updates International Returns Policy: New Requirements Effective September 2024

Amazon has announced an important update to its international return policy, which will take effect on September 16, 2024. The new updated international return policy is applicable for orders fulfilled by sellers. The International sellers who haven't specified a default U.S. return address in Seller Central will be particularly affected by this update.

Key Changes Effective September 16, 2024

Here are the main updates to the policy:

a. Returnless Refund or Prepaid Return Label Required: Within two days of receiving a return request, international sellers must either provide a returnless refund or a prepaid international return shipping label.

b. Reduced Resolution Window: Previously, sellers had five days to resolve the return request. This has now been shortened to two days to improve the customer experience.

Amazon will automatically refund the customer on behalf of the seller if neither option is provided within the two-day window, and the cost will be deducted from the seller's account. When this happens, sellers will be notified via email.

After authorizing a return request, sellers can manage returns by uploading a return label via the Manage Returns page in Seller Central.

Impact on Sellers

This update offers the following benefits to sellers:

a. Faster Response Times: The Sellers now have to respond to return requests quickly, reducing the response time from five days to two days.

b. Increased Responsibilities: Automatic refunds will be issued for any returns that are not resolved within the new time frame. This could affect the profitability of the seller.

Advantages of the New Policy

The updated international return policy seeks to improve the general user experience:

a. Simplified Returns: A faster return experience makes customers happier, which can result in positive feedback and better engagement.

b. Automation in the Selling Process: A simplified process for buyers and sellers is ensured by automating refunds if a resolution isn't provided.

Next Steps for Sellers

The Sellers can follow a few steps to prepare themselves:

a. Review Return Policies: Sellers can make sure their return policies are updated and comply with Amazon's new guidelines before September 16.

b. Track Return Requests: Check Seller Central's Manage Returns page frequently, and reply to inquiries as promptly as possible.

c. Configure Notifications: Set up email alerts to receive notifications and stay updated to take action on return-related updates.

Conclusion

Amazon's update to its international returns policy offers both advantages and responsibilities for sellers. By adapting to the shorter response window and using Amazon's tools efficiently, sellers can maintain a positive relationship with their international customers.
