Amazon's SVP of devices and services Dave Limp to retire after 13 years
Dave Limp, Amazon's senior vice president (SVP) of devices and services, announced his plans to retire in the coming months after more than 13 years at the company. Limp oversees popular products like Amazon's Echo smart speakers and the Alexa voice assistant, among other initiatives.
Limp joined Amazon in 2010 as vice president of Kindle and has since expanded his portfolio to include Fire TV, Fire tablets, Ring, eero, and Luna. He also led the development of Amazon's first smartphone, the Fire Phone, which was discontinued in 2015 due to poor sales.
Limp is one of the most senior executives at Amazon and reports directly to CEO Andy Jassy. He is also a close confidant of Jassy and former CEO Jeff Bezos, who stepped down in earlier.
Limp's division faced some challenges recently
Limp's division has faced some challenges recently, such as layoffs, competition, and losses. In February, Amazon laid off dozens of employees from its Lab126 hardware division, which develops devices like Echo and Kindle. The company also faces stiff competition from rivals like Google and Apple in the smart speaker and voice assistant market.
Limp's successor has not been announced yet
Limp's successor has not been announced yet, but he will remain in his role for the next few months and host the next fall devices and services event on September 28th. The event is expected to showcase new products and updates from Amazon's devices and services unit. This was stated in an official announcement by Amazon.
In an official blog by the compnay, Limp said he loves his job, but he also wants to look into the future through a different lens. He is not sure what that future is right now, but he said it won't be in the consumer electronics space.
"I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together over the past decade-plus," Limp wrote in an email to his team. "I'm also incredibly optimistic about what lies ahead for this team and these businesses." He also expressed his pride and optimism for his team and his businesses, and thanked them for their support and collaboration.
In the same blog, CEO Andy Jassy said, 'Under Dave’s leadership, Amazon has become one of the world’s leading innovators in building devices and underlying services that customers love.'
