Austrian SMEs reach new heights with Amazon’s online marketplace
Austrian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that sold on Amazon in 2022 achieved record export sales of more than 550 million euros, an increase of more than 15 percent compared to the previous year.
In an official statement, the company reveals that more than 2,500 Austrian SMEs used Amazon's online marketplace to reach customers across the EU and beyond, with over 1,500 of them exporting worldwide. More than 100 of these businesses crossed the one million euro sales threshold last year.

One of the success stories is D&D Living, a Vorarlberg-based company that designs clever home products and uses Amazon's pan-European shipping network to expand its exports. The company, founded in 2018 by childhood friends Daniel Ender and Daniel Schlacher, saw its sales on Amazon increase by 150 percent per year on average in the past three years, reaching 3 million euros in 2022. The founders plan to launch in the US market before the end of this year, following the trend of other Austrian SMEs that increased their global sales from over 50 million euros in 2021 to over 85 million euros in 2022.
Germany remains the largest export market for Austrian SMEs selling on Amazon, followed by the US and France. The most popular product categories are home, computer & accessories, sports & leisure, drugstore & personal care and toys. Salzburg-based NAKED Optics, a company that produces ski goggles and sunglasses, confirms this. "The majority of our sales are made from the German market. We have seen great developments compared to previous years, especially during the winter,” says founder Florian Pflanzl.
Salzburg also leads the export growth by federal states, with more than 150 SMEs generating over 70 million euros in export sales, an increase of more than 25 percent compared to 2021. Styria and Vorarlberg follow closely behind, with more than 20 percent growth each. Vienna remains the top city for export sales, with more than 600 SMEs selling over 150 million euros worth of products abroad. Graz and Linz rank second and third respectively, with Linz showing a remarkable increase of more than 55 percent in export sales.
The impressive export performance of Austrian SMEs selling on Amazon in 2022 shows the potential of online marketplaces to help businesses reach new customers and markets, especially in times of uncertainty and disruption. Amazon's online marketplace, pan-European shipping network and global reach provide a platform for Austrian SMEs to showcase their products and grow their sales, both within the EU and beyond.
With more than 100 Austrian SMEs crossing the one million euro sales threshold last year, Amazon says that it is committed to supporting the growth and innovation of Austrian SMEs in the future.
