eBay has announced a major overhaul of its fee structure in Australia, introducing “free selling” for eligible sellers as part of a broader push to attract more inventory and casual users to the platform.

What the official announcement says
According to the company’s official update, “We’re making it free to sell for Australia-based sellers with up to $25,000 in sales in the past 12 months.” It added, “Eligible sellers will no longer pay transaction fees when they sell items on eBay.com.au, across all categories.”

Key details of the new policy
The changes, set to roll out from late April 2026, will apply to non-Pro sellers whose annual sales remain at or below AU$25,000. These sellers will no longer be charged final value (transaction) fees, which previously stood at up to 13.4% plus a fixed per-order charge.

However, the free selling model comes with conditions:
* It excludes sellers subscribed to Pro plans
* Some optional fees, such as listing upgrades or international selling charges, will still apply
* Sellers exceeding the AU$25,000 threshold will be moved to a Pro plan with standard fees

Buyer Protection fee introduced
Alongside free selling, eBay is introducing a Buyer Protection fee, which will be paid by buyers and included in the item price. This marks a shift in the platform’s revenue model, transferring part of the cost burden from sellers to buyers.

The fee structure will include a fixed charge and a percentage of the item price, aimed at supporting services such as fraud detection, secure payments, and customer support.

Strategic shift in marketplace model
The move mirrors similar changes introduced by eBay in other markets and is designed to boost participation from casual sellers. Industry observers note that reducing upfront selling costs could increase listings and competition, while the buyer-side fee model ensures continued revenue flow for the platform.

The introduction of free selling represents a significant shift in how ecommerce marketplaces balance seller incentives and platform monetisation. For small sellers, the change offers an opportunity to maximise margins, but for buyers, it may mean absorbing new costs through added protection fees.
