eBay's Small Business Report 2023: How eBay Empowers Its Sellers
eBay, the global online marketplace, has released its 2023 Small Business Report, which reveals how eBay supports the success of its sellers, who are diverse, passionate and optimistic entrepreneurs. The report is based on a survey of 4,334 sellers in six countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan and Australia.
To understand the views and experiences of eBay's small business sellers, eBay partnered with GlobeScan, a leading research and consulting firm. The aim of this survey was to measure how eBay has helped sellers launch and grow their business, and how they feel about eBay as a partner.
In an official release, Jamie Iannone, eBay President and CEO, said, “Our sellers are dedicated, passionate and knowledgeable, and this is what makes the eBay community so special. We are committed to maintaining a marketplace where small businesses can thrive, and I am proud of how eBay supports our sellers at every stage of their entrepreneurial journey.”
According to the report, 94% of sellers see a strong connection between eBay and their success. eBay provides them with access to a global customer base, a trusted platform, and a variety of tools and programs to help them sell more efficiently and effectively. eBay also enables sellers to pursue their passions, express their creativity, and achieve their goals.
The report also shows that 68% of sellers say eBay helped them start their business; 76% say eBay helped them grow. Many sellers have turned their hobbies, skills, or collections into profitable businesses on eBay, while others have expanded their existing businesses or created new ones with eBay's support. eBay has also helped sellers overcome challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, by offering financial relief, seller protection, and educational resources.
Moreover, the report reveals that most sellers are optimistic about the growth of their business, despite uncertainty about the economy. 82% of sellers expect their sales to increase or stay the same in the next 12 months, and 78% plan to invest in their business in the next year. Sellers are also confident about their ability to adapt to changing customer needs, market trends, and technological innovations.
The report also showcases some of the stories and achievements of eBay's small business community, as well as the programs and tools that eBay offers to help them grow and thrive.
Michelle Nguyen, a seller on eBay said, "eBay has changed me in that I now see myself as a businesswoman and an entrepreneur instead of a hobbyist. When I first got started, I didn't know what I was doing, but the success and the consistency and the steadiness of eBay has really calmed me."
Small businesses are the backbone of eBay, and our platform exists to power their success at every stage of their journeys. eBay sellers bring incredibly diverse inventory to our marketplace — united by a shared passion and expertise for the communities they serve, said Jordan Sweetnam who is the eBay SVP of Global Markets.
The report concludes with a message from Jamie Iannone, eBay's President and CEO, who expresses his gratitude and admiration for eBay's sellers, and reaffirms eBay's commitment to empowering them. He says, "Our sellers are the heart and soul of eBay. They inspire us every day with their passion, creativity, and resilience. We are proud to partner with them and support them on their journey. Together, we are building a more inclusive and sustainable future for ecommerce."
