India ranks fifth in eBay’s list of new small online businesses
eBay, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, has revealed that India is among its top five markets for new small online businesses. The company’s latest report shows that 58% of the small businesses selling on eBay in India were newcomers in 2020, meaning that they started selling on the platform in the last four years and crossed the sales threshold of USD 10,000 in 2020.
The report, titled Small Online Business Inclusive Global Trade Report, ranks India fifth after Morocco (98%), Israel (68%), Japan (62%) and Malaysia (60%) in terms of newcomer rate. The report also states that more than half of the small businesses on eBay in nine of its 18 markets were newcomers in 2020, indicating a growing trend of online entrepreneurship amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pavan Ponnappa, Head Categories, Acquisition & Marketing at eBay India Cross Border Trade, said that the high newcomer rate in India reflects the increasing adoption of online marketplaces by Indian businesses to reach global customers and diversify their income sources. He added that eBay has over 1 lakh registered sellers in India who sell across various categories such as clothing, accessories, home decor, handicrafts, electronics and more.
eBay entered the Indian market in 2005 and later sold its India business to Flipkart in 2017. However, it continues to operate as an independent entity in India and enables Indian sellers to sell their products to over 190 markets globally.
The growth of India's small businesses on eBay reflects the country's increasing adoption of e-commerce platforms as a means to reach a broader consumer base and tap into global markets. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, online marketplaces like eBay is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering the growth and success of small businesses in India and beyond.
