Navigating New Routes: Amazon India Pioneers Cargo Transport via Inland Waterways

In a groundbreaking move, Amazon India became the first e-commerce company to collaborate with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), signaling a significant shift in the logistics and transportation landscape of the country. This pioneering initiative will see Amazon utilizing India's extensive network of navigable inland waterways, spanning an impressive 14,500 km, including rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks. A pilot route is set to be launched between Patna and Kolkata, marking the beginning of a new era in cargo shipment.

Amazon India's decision to incorporate inland waterways into its supply chain is a testament to its commitment to exploring sustainable and efficient logistics solutions. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with IWAI under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways aims to facilitate the movement of containerized cargo, thereby establishing a robust network for cargo shipment on inland waterways.
