No More Boxes: Amazon’s Latest Move to Speed Up Delivery and Reduce Waste

The e-commerce major Amazon is changing the way it delivers some of its orders. Instead of using its signature brown boxes, some orders will arrive in the manufacturer's packaging, without any additional wrapping. The company claims that this will reduce waste and carbon emissions, as well as save time and money for Amazon and its customers. According to media reports, presently around 11% of the total packages are delivered without extra packaging by Amazon.

According to Amazon, the new initiative called "Ship in Own Container" (SIOC), will apply to products that have durable and frustration-free packaging, such as toys, household items, and electronics. The company says this is part of its efforts to improve delivery speed and efficiency, reduce costs, and reach its sustainability goals. According to Amazon, this change will save millions of pounds of packaging material and reduce carbon emissions.

Customers can still choose to add extra packaging at checkout if they prefer, especially if they are ordering gifts or items that need more protection. However, some customers are worried that this change will increase the risk of package theft, as the contents of their orders will be more visible to potential thieves.

Notable, Amazon tests packages which are eligible to ship without a container. The companly claims that the system has improved through the use of artificial intelligence. The company performs up to 19 different tests including compressing items, vibrations and drops from different angles etc. These test results are key in deciding which item needs extra container or can be shipped without it.

Experts have different opinions on how this change will affect package theft. Some say that thieves prefer the unpredictability of a sealed box, and might avoid items that are clearly labeled or have low value. Others say that thieves might target items that are more recognizable or desirable, such as electronics or branded products.

Amazon says it is working with its delivery partners to ensure the safety and security of its customers' orders. It also offers various options for customers to track and receive their deliveries, such as Amazon Key, Amazon Hub, and Amazon Day.
