VAT and Digital Skills Top Concerns for European SMEs, Highlights Amazon Research

The e-commerce revolution is transforming the way small and medium enterprises (SMEs) do business, but not without challenges. In a rapidly digitizing world, SMEs are at the forefront of the e-commerce revolution. However, a recent survey by Amazon has shed light on the difficulties these businesses face, emphasizing their need for support in areas such as VAT, compliance, and digital skills.

According to Amazon’s research, which surveyed 2,500 SME owners across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, a staggering 70% of them lack confidence in scaling their businesses online. This comes as a surprise, especially when the majority of these business owners recognize the immense growth potential that digitization offers.

As a result, one of the primary concerns for these SMEs is the intricate web of VAT and customs compliance, with 70% of the respondents seeking assistance in this area. Additionally, 73% expressed the need for guidance on how to best utilize a logistics support network, highlighting the operational challenges they face.

In an official blog, Amazon admitted the growth of SMEs in Europe is undeniable, with an 18% increase over the past 14 years (2008-2022). These businesses employed approximately 84.6 million individuals in 2022. With 82% of these SMEs acknowledging the benefits of a digital sales approach, the potential for online expansion is vast. Yet, the path to digital transformation is riddled with obstacles. Many SMEs are unsure about scaling up and face significant barriers in digitizing their operations.

Amazon added that despite these challenges, European SMEs are not backing down. They are investing heavily in upskilling and digital education. On average, business owners are dedicating 10 hours a week, amounting to 65 days a year, to research and understand how to scale up and manage the surge in online sales.

To address these needs, Amazon offers a plethora of tools and resources to assist SMEs in their digital journey. From the “Compliance Solutions by Amazon” that provides an integrated solution for various compliance needs to the “Amazon Small Business Accelerator” that offers a suite of free resources on diverse topics, Amazon is positioning itself as a pivotal partner for SMEs in Europe.

Xavier Flamand, VP Amazon Europe Seller Services, commented on the findings, emphasizing Amazon’s commitment to supporting SMEs. He stated, “We understand that launching or scaling an existing e-commerce business can be a daunting, complex, and time-consuming experience for sellers. We want business owners to feel confident and supported in navigating the complexities of topics such as VAT and compliance to ensure that they can transition and grow their businesses smoothly.”

The digital landscape is ever-evolving, and while it offers immense opportunities, it also presents unique challenges. European SMEs, though enthusiastic about the prospects of e-commerce, are calling for more support in areas of VAT, compliance, and digital skills. Platforms like Amazon are stepping up to the plate, but as the e-commerce domain continues to expand, a collaborative effort from industry leaders, policymakers, and educational institutions will be crucial to ensure that SMEs are not left behind.
