Walmart Opens Largest Fulfillment Center
Walmart has opened its largest fulfillment center to date in McCordsville, Indiana. The 2.2 million-square-foot facility is located 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis and is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs by the end of 2025.
The McCordsville fulfillment center is designed to use state-of-the-art technology to increase speed of delivery and create tech-empowered career opportunities for associates. The facility uses a five-step fulfillment process that reduces the manual handling of packages from 12 steps to just five.
“Indiana is proud to welcome this next generation Walmart fulfillment center, which represents a significant investment in our industry and our people,” said Ann Lathrop, chief strategy officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. He added, “Walmart has long been a good corporate partner in Indiana, and we’re excited to see their commitment grow in Hancock County.”
Walmart says that the McCordsville fulfillment center will enable the company to reach 95% of the U.S. population with next-day or two-day shipping. The company is also investing in new transportation infrastructure to support the growing demand for online shopping.
“The McCordsville grand opening marks a major milestone in our supply chain modernization journey,” said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president, Fulfillment Network Operations for Walmart U.S. He added, “With more customers shopping online, we’re leveraging state-of-the-art technology to increase speed of delivery all while creating tech empowered career opportunities for our associates.”
