Walmart+ Assist: A New Membership Program for Government Assisted Customers
Walmart, the largest retailer in the U.S., has announced a new program that aims to make its membership service, Walmart+, more affordable and accessible for customers who receive government assistance. The program, called Walmart+ Assist, offers a 50% discount on the monthly or annual fee of Walmart+, which provides benefits such as free shipping and delivery, gas discounts and video streaming.
What is Walmart+ Assist?
Walmart+ Assist is a program that allows customers who are on government assistance programs, such as SNAP and others, to sign up for a Walmart+ membership at half the regular price. The discounted membership costs $6.47 per month or $49 per year, compared to the standard price of $12.95 per month or $98 per year.
In an official statement, Venessa Yates, SVP and General Manager, Walmart+ said that the program was designed to "assist those who need it most" and to help them "save time and money" with the benefits of Walmart+. The program is available to all eligible new and existing members, who can verify their eligibility through SheerID, a third-party verification provider.

Walmart+ is a membership service that was launched in 2020 as a competitor to Amazon Prime. It offers a range of benefits that include:

How does Walmart+ Assist fit into Walmart's mission?
Walmart says that helping people save money and live better is at the core of everything it does, and that Walmart+ is that mission "supercharged". The company also claims that it has been innovating to support customers who use government assistance in other ways, such as participating in the USDA's SNAP Online Purchase pilot since 2019. The pilot allows customers to pay with their SNAP benefits online, giving them access to conveniences like pickup and delivery. Walmart is now the first retailer to accept SNAP benefits online in all 50 states.
