Wing drones bring convenience and innovation to Walmart shoppers in Dallas
Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has teamed up with Wing, a drone delivery company owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, to offer a new way of shopping for its customers in the Dallas area. Starting from August 24, 2023, customers can order items such as frozen treats, household essentials, and eggs from the Wing app and receive them within minutes via drone delivery.
The service will cover an approximate 6-mile range from two Walmart stores in the Dallas area and use drones that can fly beyond visual line of sight. This means that the drones can fly autonomously without being monitored by a human operator. The drones are also designed to be eco-friendly, as they use electric power and reduce carbon emissions.
‘The service will be offered from two stores in the Dallas metro area in the coming months, enabling us to reach an additional 60,000 homes’, said Prathibha Rajashekhar, SVP of Innovation & Automation, Walmart U.S, in an official statement.
In an official statement, Shannon Nash, Chief Financial Officer, Wing said, ‘’This is a major milestone for Wing, as we continue down our path toward building capabilities to support some of the most significant delivery operations in the world. Our technology is designed to complement existing delivery offerings, making overall systems more efficient and able to meet real customer needs.’’
He further added, ‘’Wing’s drones are reliable, fast, and safe. They cruise at 65 mph and use a tether to gently deliver even delicate items – like a carton of eggs – to very precise locations outside customer homes in urban and suburban environments.’’

Wing, which was launched in 2014 as a project under Alphabet's research lab X, has been operating drone delivery services in several countries, including Australia, Finland, and the U.S. The company said that it has delivered more than 100,000 items to date and that it is excited to work with Walmart to expand its service in the U.S. The partnership between Walmart and Wing is part of their ongoing efforts to expand their drone delivery network across the U.S. and provide innovative and convenient last-mile delivery options.
Customers can download the Wing app from App Store or Google Play and enter their address to determine if their home is within the Wing drone delivery range. Wing’s new hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., six days a week (open every day except Wednesdays).
