Amazon Announces Changes to Handling and Transit Time Settings for US Shipments
New Handling and Transit Rule to take effect from October 25
In a move to improve customer experience and reduce late deliveries, Amazon has announced significant changes to its handling and transit time settings for orders shipped to the United States. These changes, effective in October 2024, will impact sellers who fulfil orders themselves. The timing of the new rules, announced on Seller Central, is crucial as it comes during the start of the peak holiday season. Sellers, gearing up for the peak season, will have to plan accordingly to meet the new requirements.
Transit Time Settings
Starting October 25, 2024, Amazon will introduce more transit time ranges for shipping from China to the continental US, with options ranging from 2-4 days to 14-20 days. The maximum transit time will be reduced from 28 days to 20 days, and any sellers currently using 14-28 days as their manually set transit time will automatically be updated to 14-20 days.
Handling Time Settings
Amazon will also implement automated handling time to set more accurate handling times for SKUs sold on Amazon.com and shipped from warehouses outside the US. This feature will base handling times on the seller's historical order processing and carrier handoff times. If a seller has no shipping history for a particular SKU, their manually set handling time will be used.

Automated Handling Time Implementation
Amazon said that the automated handling time will be enabled if a seller's manually configured handling time is two or more days slower than their actual handling time. Once enabled, the seller will not be able to turn it off. Sellers can request manual handling time overrides for custom-made, media, and heavy and bulky SKUs. Still, these SKUs will not receive on-time delivery rate (OTDR) protection from late deliveries.
Protecting Late Shipment Rates
To help maintain other account health metrics, Amazon will protect sellers’ late shipment rates when automated handling time is in use. Sellers can review their current handling time in the Fulfillment Insight dashboard.
These changes to handling and transit time settings are part of Amazon's ongoing efforts to ensure reliable, on-time delivery for customers. Sellers must adapt to the new requirements, which include faster transit times and more accurate handling times. By partnering with reliable carriers, optimizing fulfilment processes, and leveraging Amazon's tools, sellers can successfully navigate these changes and continue to provide fast and efficient shipping to their customers.
