Amazon Commits $100 Million to Boost Affordable Housing in Bellevue
Initiative Aims to Speed Up Construction and Provide Homes for Low- to Moderate-Income Families
Amazon has announced a significant commitment of $100 million to support affordable housing in the City of Bellevue. This new investment is designed to help low- to moderate-income families find stable homes sooner by shortening construction timelines. The update was shared by Amazon in an official blog, highlighting the company's goal of partnering closely with city officials to expand housing options.
Located in Washington State, the City of Bellevue is a rapidly growing area known for its tech-driven economy, diverse community, and scenic beauty. Home to thriving businesses and a strong job market, Bellevue also faces rising housing costs. This new commitment from Amazon is a major development that will help the city meet its long-term affordability goals.
The Bellevue investment is part of Amazon's broader $3.6 billion initiative to preserve and create 35,000 affordable homes across multiple regions, including the Puget Sound area, the National Capital region, and Nashville. In Bellevue alone, Amazon's efforts have already helped create or preserve more than 1,400 homes, boosting the city's affordable housing supply by 31%.

A key goal of this partnership is to speed up construction timelines by one to two years. David Zapolsky, Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer at Amazon, underscored the importance of moving quickly so families can benefit faster. "I’m excited to announce Amazon is committing $100 million to the City of Bellevue to fund high-priority affordable housing initiatives as we break ground on Spring District, one of our largest Puget Sound developments," Zapolsky said. He further mentioned that this commitment brings Amazon closer to its mission of "securing affordable housing for those in need."
One of the major projects benefiting from this new funding is BRIDGE Housing's Spring District development, which will create 234 affordable homes. These homes will be near the Spring District Link rail station, allowing residents convenient access to transportation and essential amenities. The community will include studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for households earning 60% or below the Area Median Income. Forty of the units will be set aside for individuals with developmental disabilities. Construction is expected to finish by November 2026.
Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson praised this major investment, stating, "We have a courageous and dedicated partner in Amazon, who recognizes the complex and pressing needs of the moment and joins us in developing innovative solutions. This gives me confidence in our future." Her words echo the broader sentiment in Bellevue, where city leaders have been working to address rising costs of living.
Last year alone, Amazon contributed $68 million to 120 Washington state community partners. Since 2021, the company has committed more than $780 million to help create or preserve affordable homes for nearly 19,000 individuals. By collaborating with city officials, Amazon continues to invest in projects that make a tangible difference for people and families in the Puget Sound region.
With construction timelines expected to shorten, the $100 million commitment to the City of Bellevue marks a strategic move in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing. This collaboration between Amazon and the city underscores a broader vision of creating stable, inclusive communities. As new developments like the Spring District come to fruition, Bellevue residents can look forward to more housing options that align with the city's growth and the community's evolving needs.
