Amazon Expands AGL Shipping to More Battery Electronics and Mechanical Devices

More Amazon sellers can now move previously restricted inventory through Amazon Global Logistics, or AGL, following an expansion of the program's eligible product catalog. The change covers several types of battery-containing electronics, small mechanical devices and products that meet Amazon's "Non-DG Empty Equipment" standard.

The update was announced on Seller Central on September 24, 2026. Amazon said products such as Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches, portable power banks and qualifying new empty equipment can now be shipped as general cargo using AGL's air and ocean freight services.

For sellers handling these products, the expansion could make it easier to consolidate more SKUs under Amazon's cross-border logistics network instead of arranging separate transportation for products that were previously restricted.

More Battery-Containing Products Become AGL Eligible
The biggest change is the broader range of products that Amazon Global Logistics can accept. According to the Seller Central announcement, AGL now accepts products containing nickel-cadmium, alkaline, zinc-based and silver oxide batteries. Amazon is also accepting qualifying brand-new mechanical devices shipped without fuel or hazardous residue.

This expands the types of inventory that sellers can potentially include in AGL shipments. Amazon specifically identified Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches and portable power banks among examples of products covered by the expanded catalog.

However, sellers should not assume that every battery-powered product automatically qualifies. Product classification, battery type, condition and documentation can affect shipping eligibility.

What Does "Non-DG Empty Equipment" Mean for Sellers?
Another notable part of the update is support for products meeting the "Non-DG Empty Equipment" standard. DG generally refers to dangerous goods. Amazon's announcement says brand-new mechanical devices shipped without fuel or hazardous residue can now be accepted under the expanded AGL product coverage.

This distinction is important because equipment containing fuel, hazardous residue or other regulated materials may be subject to different transportation requirements. Sellers shipping mechanical products should therefore verify the exact classification of their inventory rather than relying only on the general product category.

No Change to the AGL Booking Process
Sellers do not need to learn a new workflow to take advantage of the expanded eligibility. Amazon says the AGL interface and booking process remain unchanged. Sellers can submit their bookings through the existing process, and the AGL operations team will provide guidance regarding any shipping documentation that may be required.

This means sellers who already use AGL can continue creating shipments through their familiar Seller Central workflow. For sellers new to the service, Amazon says they should first establish their profile through the AGL program portal. They can then create a shipment in Seller Central and choose AGL as the shipping method.

Both Air and Ocean Freight Supported
The newly eligible product categories can be transported through both AGL air and ocean freight, giving sellers greater flexibility when balancing shipping speed and cost. Ocean freight may be better suited to larger, planned inventory replenishments where cost is the main consideration. Air freight can be useful when sellers need inventory more quickly, particularly for high-value or time-sensitive products.

Amazon says its AGL air freight service can move eligible inventory directly into its fulfillment network within approximately seven to 10 days. Its ocean options include Standard Ocean and Fast Ocean services, with full-container-load and less-than-container-load options available on supported routes.

Why the Expansion Matters for Sellers
The change could be particularly useful for sellers with catalogs spanning both conventional products and battery-powered electronics. Previously, restrictions on certain SKUs could force businesses to separate inventory and use different logistics providers. Expanding AGL eligibility gives qualifying sellers an opportunity to consolidate a larger share of their inventory within the same logistics system.

AGL is designed as an end-to-end cross-border freight service. Amazon says its services can include origin pickup, export declaration, international transportation, destination customs clearance and delivery into Amazon fulfillment or warehousing facilities. Sellers can also book, pay for and track AGL shipments through Seller Central.

Amazon currently lists AGL shipping from mainland China, Hong Kong and Vietnam to supported destinations in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan, although available routes and services vary by origin and destination.

Potential Benefits for Inventory Management
For eligible sellers, the expanded catalog could have several practical benefits. Consolidating more SKUs into AGL shipments may simplify coordination between suppliers, freight providers and Amazon. It could also make replenishment planning easier when products with different characteristics can travel through the same logistics network.

The change could be particularly relevant for electronics sellers whose catalogs include products such as smartwatches, Bluetooth devices and portable power products. Amazon says AGL can also integrate with Amazon Warehousing and Distribution on supported routes. AWD provides bulk inventory storage and can automatically replenish FBA inventory based on demand.

This creates the possibility of a more integrated supply chain in which qualifying inventory moves internationally through AGL, enters AWD for bulk storage and is subsequently replenished into FBA.

Check Product Eligibility Before Booking
Despite the broader eligibility, sellers should still verify individual products before planning large shipments.
Battery-powered products and equipment can be subject to transportation, dangerous-goods and documentation requirements. The new announcement expands AGL's eligible catalog, but it does not mean that all products containing batteries or all mechanical equipment are automatically unrestricted.

Sellers should make sure that product information in Seller Central accurately reflects the battery type and other relevant characteristics of the item. It is also advisable to confirm eligibility before committing a large quantity of inventory to a shipment. If Amazon requests additional documentation during the booking process, sellers should provide it before the cargo is handed over.

What Sellers Should Do Now
Sellers who previously had SKUs excluded from AGL because they contained batteries or fell within one of the affected equipment categories should recheck those products. Existing AGL users can create a shipment through Seller Central as usual and select Amazon Global Logistics as the shipping method. Amazon says its operations team will guide sellers through any necessary shipping documentation.

Sellers who have not used the service can first create an AGL profile and then evaluate available freight options, routes and costs for their inventory.

It is also worth comparing air and ocean freight rather than selecting a transportation mode solely on price. Inventory levels, sales velocity, seasonal demand and expected replenishment dates should be considered when deciding which option is more suitable.

The latest AGL expansion removes an important logistics barrier for sellers handling certain battery-containing electronics and qualifying mechanical equipment.

By allowing products including Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches, portable power banks and other newly eligible items to move as general cargo through both air and ocean freight, Amazon is giving affected sellers more options for consolidating cross-border inventory.

For sellers, the immediate opportunity is to revisit SKUs that were previously unsuitable for AGL and check whether they now qualify. Businesses that can consolidate more inventory through AGL may be able to simplify freight management, reduce the number of logistics providers involved in their supply chain and improve replenishment planning.

The existing booking process remains unchanged, making the transition relatively straightforward for current AGL users. Sellers should, however, continue checking product classification and documentation requirements before shipping, particularly for products containing batteries or equipment that could fall under dangerous-goods regulations.
