As an Amazon seller, one of the most important tasks is creating a new ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) for your products. Whether you're a seasoned seller or just starting out, becoming familiar with ASIN is essential for success on the world's most popular ecommerce platform.

Days before the upcoming Prime Day 2024 event, Amazon India posted a comprehensive guide on creating new ASINs (Amazon Standard Identification Numbers). The update posted on Seller Central is an essential update for sellers, both new and experienced, as it provides a step-by-step process for listing products effectively on the platform.

Apart from Amazon India's step-by-step guide, we have incorporated a few more key details related to ASIN into our blog to help you.

What is ASIN?
An ASIN, or Amazon Standard Identification Number, is an indispensable element in the Amazon marketplace, serving as a unique product identifier. An ASIN is a unique 10-character alphanumeric code assigned to each product listed on Amazon. This identifier is used exclusively within the Amazon ecosystem to manage and track products. Unlike universal product codes (UPCs) or International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs), ASINs are specific to Amazon and not used outside its platform.

Two Ways to Create ASINs
There are two ways create an ASIN on Amazon.
Option 1:
Create an ASIN to match an existing product, or
Option 2:
Create an ASIN that’s new to Amazon.

Option 1. Creating an ASIN to Match an Existing Product
If you want to list a product that already exists in Amazon’s catalog, follow these steps:
i) Select Add a Product from the Manage Inventory page.
ii) Search for the Product using keywords or a product identifier like UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN for more accurate results.
iii) Locate the Product and click “Show variations” if applicable.
iv) Select a Condition and then click “Sell this Product.”
v) Enter Your Offer Details in the provided data fields and select “Save.”

Note: This option is not available to Amazon Handmade sellers.

Option 2: Creatin an ASIN for a New-to-Amazon Product
To list a completely new product on Amazon, follow these steps:
i) Select Add a Product from the Manage Inventory page.
ii) Choose Either “Product IDs” or “Blank Forum” and enter the required information.
iii) Select “Create New Products.”
iv) Enter the Required Information within the “Vital Info” and “Offer” tabs.
v) Select “Save” to complete the listing process.

Your offer will be visible to buyers within 15 minutes, and you can edit the information for your product listings anytime.

Purpose and Importance of ASINs
The primary purpose of an ASIN is to provide a standardized method for identifying products on Amazon. This standardization streamlines the search and purchase process for both sellers and buyers, ensuring that each product is uniquely identifiable. ASINs also play a crucial role in inventory management, helping sellers keep track of their products efficiently.

ASINs and Product Listings
ASINs are integral to creating accurate and optimized product listings on Amazon. They help in categorizing products correctly and improving their visibility in search results. Sellers can also use ASINs to analyze top-selling competitors and optimize their own listings accordingly.

ASINs and Variations
When a product comes in different variations, such as size or color, Amazon distinguishes between parent and child items. Each variation may have its own ASIN, but they are linked to a parent ASIN that represents the main product.

International ASINs
ASINs can be used internationally, allowing sellers to list the same product in different Amazon marketplaces without needing new barcodes or GTINs. This simplifies logistics and helps in maintaining consistent product listings across regions. However, localized images and text annotations are not allowed for the same ASIN in different marketplaces.

ASIN Lookup and Tools
There are various tools available for looking up ASINs, which can be found using the search box on Amazon’s homepage or within the Seller Central account. These tools are essential for sellers to manage their product listings and track competitors.

Tips for the Trade
ASIN Limits
New sellers are limited in the number of listings they can create each week. As your sales increase, so will your capacity to create new listings. Strategic prioritization of listings is essential, especially for new sellers.

Avoiding Duplicate ASINs
Before creating a new ASIN, ensure your product does not already exist in Amazon’s catalog. Duplicate ASINs can lead to suspension or permanent removal of your selling privileges. Matching your product to existing listings enhances the customer experience and leverages buyer interest and traffic.

Understanding how to create a new ASIN is crucial for any Amazon seller. This update from Amazon India provides clear guidelines and tips to help you navigate the process effectively. By following these steps, you can optimize your listings, avoid common pitfalls, and enhance your overall selling experience on Amazon. If you have any additional tips or experiences to share, Amazon encourages you to leave comments and engage with the seller community.
