Amazon has announced a new fuel and logistics-related surcharge for sellers operating in Europe, marking a significant shift in fulfilment cost structures. The update, shared on Seller Central, will impact Fulfilment by Amazon and Multi-Channel Fulfilment services across key EU markets. The move comes as fuel prices and logistics expenses continue to remain elevated globally, forcing major carriers and ecommerce platforms to pass on a portion of the cost to sellers.

What the new surcharge means for EU sellers
According to the Seller Central announcement, a 1.5 percent surcharge will be applied to fulfilment fees for FBA operations across major European countries including the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain from April 17, 2026. The same surcharge will extend to Multi-Channel Fulfilment from May 2, 2026 in selected markets.

Amazon clarified that the surcharge is applied only on fulfilment fees and not on the product’s selling price. On average, sellers can expect an additional cost of around £0.05 or €0.05 per unit, although the actual impact will vary depending on product size and weight.

Why Amazon has introduced the surcharge
The company stated that it has been absorbing rising fuel and logistics costs for an extended period. However, continued pressure on global supply chains has made it necessary to introduce a temporary surcharge.

Several global factors have contributed to the increase in logistics costs. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in key energy-producing regions have kept fuel prices volatile. Disruptions in major shipping routes, including congestion and security concerns, have increased transit times and costs. Additionally, inflation in transportation, warehousing and labour across Europe has further pushed up fulfilment expenses.

Industry-wide trend and comparison
Amazon also highlighted that similar surcharges have already been implemented by major logistics carriers across Europe. Compared to industry benchmarks, the 1.5 percent surcharge is positioned as relatively moderate, suggesting Amazon is still absorbing a portion of the increased costs.

This indicates a broader industry trend where logistics providers are increasingly linking pricing structures to fuel cost fluctuations.

Tools available for sellers to manage impact
To help sellers adjust, Amazon has updated several tools on Seller Central. These include Profit Analytics, the Revenue Calculator and Fee Preview reports. These tools now reflect the surcharge and allow sellers to estimate both per-unit and overall business impact.

Sellers are advised to review their pricing strategies, especially for low-margin products. Adjustments in pricing, bundling strategies or inventory planning may be necessary to maintain profitability.

What sellers should do next
Experts suggest that sellers closely monitor fulfilment costs and evaluate whether to pass on the additional expense to customers or absorb it partially. Optimising packaging, reducing dimensional weight and improving supply chain efficiency can also help offset the surcharge impact.

For cross-border sellers, understanding variations in cost across different EU markets will be critical in maintaining competitive pricing.

Amazon’s introduction of a fuel and logistics surcharge in Europe reflects the growing pressure of global supply chain disruptions and rising fuel costs. While the increase appears modest on a per-unit basis, it can significantly affect margins at scale. With updated tools and careful planning, sellers can navigate the change, but the development signals a continued shift towards more dynamic and cost-sensitive fulfilment pricing in the ecommerce ecosystem.
