Amazon introduces stricter handling time rules for seller-fulfilled products from June 29

New Seller Central policy pushes faster and more accurate shipping promises as Amazon links quicker delivery estimates to higher sales growth

Amazon sellers using seller-fulfilled shipping will soon need to maintain more accurate handling times for their listings under a new policy update shared on Seller Central. The new handling time requirement will officially take effect on June 29, 2026, and is aimed at improving delivery accuracy and customer trust across the marketplace.

The move comes as Amazon continues to prioritize faster delivery promises for online shoppers. According to details shared on Seller Central, Amazon said that every one-day improvement in promised delivery time leads to an average 5% increase in sales. The company believes inaccurate handling times are causing unnecessarily long delivery estimates that could negatively affect conversions and customer satisfaction.

Why handling time matters for sellers
Handling time refers to the period between when a customer places an order and when the seller ships the product. It directly affects the estimated delivery date shown to buyers on Amazon.

Amazon noted that more than 87% of seller-fulfilled orders in the US are already shipped within one day. However, many sellers still configure longer handling times at the SKU level, leading to slower delivery promises than necessary.

With the new policy, Amazon wants sellers to align their configured handling times with their actual shipping performance.

Two compliance options for sellers
According to the Seller Central update, sellers will have two ways to comply with the new handling time requirement.

Enable Automated Handling Time
Amazon is strongly recommending sellers enable Automated Handling Time, also known as AHT. This system automatically adjusts handling times based on a seller’s recent shipping history.

The company said AHT offers several advantages, including:
- Automatic handling time adjustments based on real performance
- Reduced need to manually monitor individual SKUs
- Protection against late shipment rate penalties
- More accurate delivery promises for buyers
- Sellers can enable the feature through their Shipping Settings inside Seller Central.

Maintain accurate SKU-specific handling times manually
Sellers who prefer manual control can continue setting handling times at the SKU level. However, Amazon said these handling times must consistently match actual shipment performance.

Amazon will monitor seller performance over a rolling 30-day period. If a SKU is consistently shipped at least one day faster than the configured handling time, Amazon will flag the listing and notify the seller.

Once flagged, sellers will get 30 days to correct the handling time setting.

What happens if sellers do not comply
If sellers fail to provide accurate handling times after being notified, Amazon said it will begin managing handling times for those SKUs automatically.

In such cases, Amazon will also provide late shipment rate protection for 180 days. This could help protect seller account health metrics while Amazon manages the shipping promise adjustments.

However, sellers may lose some manual control over delivery settings if Amazon takes over handling time management for affected listings.

Exemptions under the new rule
Amazon clarified that the new handling time requirement will not apply to:
- Custom products
- Handmade items

Heavy and Bulky less-than-truckload shipments
These categories often require more complex preparation or shipping arrangements that can naturally involve longer processing times.

What sellers should do now
Amazon sellers are being advised to review their current handling time settings before the June 29 rollout date.

Industry experts say sellers should compare configured handling times against actual shipment performance data to identify discrepancies early. Sellers who regularly ship products within one day may benefit from shortening handling times to improve conversion rates and Buy Box competitiveness.

Using Automated Handling Time could also reduce operational workload for high-volume sellers managing large SKU catalogs.

The latest Seller Central update highlights Amazon’s continued push toward faster delivery expectations in the e-commerce industry. For seller-fulfilled merchants, accurate handling times may now become just as important as pricing and inventory management in maintaining visibility and customer trust on the platform.

For many sellers, adapting early could lead to better delivery estimates, stronger customer confidence, and potentially higher sales performance ahead of the busy second half of the year.
