Amazon has announced plans to invest more than €1 billion in Belgium between 2025 and 2027, marking its largest investment in the country to date. The company shared the details in an official blog post published during the Belgian Economic Mission to the West Coast of the United States. The investment aims to enhance the shopping experience for Belgian customers through improved logistics, faster delivery, and expanded product availability while supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

A growing presence in Belgium
Since opening its first office in Belgium in 2015 and launching amazon.com.be in 2022, Amazon has steadily increased its investment in the country. The company invested €250 million in 2023 and €300 million in 2024, contributing more than €140 million to Belgium’s GDP last year and over €350 million since 2015. The company currently employs over 400 people across Belgium, including at its Brussels headquarters, Antwerp delivery station, and Mechatronics R&D Center in Hamme.

Eva Faict, Country Manager for Amazon Belgium and the Netherlands, said, “Our planned investment of more than a billion euros in Belgium will go towards expanding our logistics network, enhancing our delivery capabilities, and strengthening our local infrastructure to better serve Belgian customers. Since launching amazon.com.be in October 2022, we've helped more than a thousand Belgian businesses reach new customers, created hundreds of local jobs, and worked with local delivery partners.”

Boosting SMEs and job creation
A key focus of this new investment is to empower Belgian entrepreneurs and small businesses. According to Amazon’s 2024 SME Impact Report, 90% of Belgian SMEs selling on Amazon export their products internationally, generating more than €350 million in total export sales in 2023.

Eléonore Simonet, Belgian Minister for SMEs, Self-Employed and Small Businesses, called the investment a major step forward. “Amazon’s €1 billion investment solidifies Belgium’s role as a leading hub for innovation and digital transformation, driving competitiveness, fostering job creation, and fueling economic growth,” she said.

Independent research by Keystone Strategy found that Amazon’s activities supported more than 1,000 indirect jobs and 200 induced jobs in 2024 across logistics, construction, and professional services. Matthias Diependaele, Minister-President of Flanders, welcomed the investment, saying it reaffirmed Belgium’s growing reputation as a strategic center for digital commerce in Europe.

Commitment to sustainability
Amazon is also emphasizing sustainability as part of its Belgian expansion. As a co-founder of The Climate Pledge, Amazon has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company is taking concrete steps in Belgium, with over 90% of parcels in Antwerp already delivered using electric vans and Brussels served by electric cargo bikes.

Amazon is also supporting environmental initiatives, including research and habitat restoration in the National Park Brabantse Wouden and collaboration with Leuven MindGate to enhance biodiversity monitoring. More than half of European shipments now use reduced or no added packaging. In addition, the Climate Pledge Friendly program helps Belgian customers identify eco-certified products, while initiatives like Amazon Used, Trade-in, and the Fix-it store encourage product reuse and recycling.

Amazon’s planned €1 billion investment marks a significant milestone in its decade-long presence in Belgium. By expanding infrastructure, empowering SMEs, and promoting sustainability, Amazon aims to deliver faster, greener, and more efficient services to Belgian customers. As the company continues to deepen its roots in Europe, this investment reinforces its commitment to innovation, job creation, and a more sustainable future for e-commerce in Belgium.
