Amazon has introduced a new layer of interactivity to its shopping experience, allowing customers to ask questions and receive real-time answers while listening to AI-generated product summaries. The company shared details of the feature in an official blog, highlighting how it aims to make product discovery more conversational and personalized.

The new feature, called “Join the chat,” is integrated into Amazon’s existing “Hear the highlights” experience. It enables users to interact directly with AI-generated hosts while listening to audio summaries of products.

From passive listening to active shopping
With this update, Amazon is shifting the user experience from passive listening to active participation. While listening to an audio summary, shoppers can ask questions such as whether a product suits beginners or if it has specific features.

Amazon explained the experience in its blog, stating, “Customers move from listening to participating.” The AI hosts respond instantly and then continue the conversation without disruption, creating a seamless flow.

The responses are not generic. According to Amazon, the system understands context and builds on what has already been discussed. This allows the answers to feel more natural and relevant, rather than repetitive or scripted.

How the AI system works behind the scenes
The feature is powered by multiple AI technologies working together. Each product summary begins with an AI-generated script. When a shopper asks a question, the script adapts in real time to include the new information.

Amazon noted, “The AI hosts take the question, deliver an answer in real time, and then pick back up where they left off.”

Advanced text-to-speech technology ensures that responses sound natural and match the tone of the original audio. This creates a dynamic experience where users can guide the conversation based on their interests.

The company also emphasized that answers are grounded in product details, customer reviews, and publicly available information, helping shoppers make informed decisions.

Expanding the role of Hear the highlights
“Hear the highlights” already provides short-form audio summaries on millions of product pages. With the addition of “Join the chat,” the feature becomes more interactive and customizable.

Amazon described the evolution clearly, saying, “Customers aren't interrupting the experience—they're part of it.”

Currently, the feature is available to users in the United States through the Amazon Shopping app, and only on select product pages where audio summaries are enabled.

How shoppers can use the feature
To access the tool, users need to open a product page in the Amazon app and tap the “Hear the highlights” button. Once the audio starts, they can tap the raised-hand icon to enter chat mode. Questions can be asked either by typing or using voice input.

The audio continues even if users navigate away from the page, allowing multitasking while shopping.

Amazon’s latest update signals a deeper push into conversational commerce, where AI acts not just as a guide but as an interactive assistant. By combining audio summaries with real-time Q&A, the company is redefining how customers explore products online. If expanded globally, this feature could significantly influence how shoppers engage with digital marketplaces and make purchase decisions.
