Amazon Sellers Alert: Get Ready for the General Product Safety Regulation in 2024

By Staff Writer

Amazon sellers operating in the EU and Northern Ireland should brace themselves for the new General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), which is set to impose significant requirements starting December 13, 2024. In an official announcement on Seller Central, Amazon said that this regulation is pertinent to sellers of most non-food consumer products, aiming to enhance safety standards and consumer protection within the market.

Key Requirements:
To align with the impending GPSR, sellers must undertake the following actions:

Labeling and Traceability: Products must meet existing labeling and traceability requirements, ensuring easy identification and safety compliance.
EU Responsible Person: Assign an EU Responsible Person for each product to handle compliance and serve as a contact point.
Comprehensive Labeling: Items must be labeled with the contact information of the Responsible Person, the manufacturer, and, if applicable, the importer, along with the type, batch, or serial number of the product.
Safety Information: Products must include safety information and warnings in the language of the country of sale to inform consumers adequately.
Online Listing Requirements: Online listings should display the Responsible Person's information, manufacturer's name, and contact details, along with a product picture and any other identification details. Warning and safety information should also be presented in the language of the country of sale.

About General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR)

The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) is a pivotal update in the European Union's product safety legislation, set to replace existing directives from December 13, 2024. It mandates that all consumer products in the EU market must be safe, encompassing non-food products across all sales channels. The GPSR introduces stringent obligations for businesses, including enhanced traceability, accident reporting, and specific rules for online marketplaces. It aims to address the challenges of digitalization and the growth of online sales, ensuring robust enforcement, effective recalls, and overall consumer protection against dangerous products.
