Amazon, the ecommerce giant, has achieved its fastest delivery speeds ever for Prime members in the United States and worldwide. According to the latest update on Seller Central, over 5 billion items were delivered on the same day or next day in 2024. The number is 30% increase compared to last year. The milestone showcases its commitment to enhance the online shopping experience for its Prime members and help sellers succeed through enhanced logistics.

Key Strategies Driving Speed Gains
Amazon attributes this accelerated delivery to three key initiatives:

1. Expansion of Same-Day Delivery Network
By expanding its Same-Day Delivery network, Amazon can now fulfill customer orders even faster in more than 120 metro areas across the United States. Advanced operations allow these sites to pick and pack orders within minutes, ensuring quicker delivery to customers’ doorsteps.

2. Regionalized Fulfillment Network
Amazon has shortened the distance items need to travel to reach customers by regionalizing its fulfillment network. In the first half of 2024, the company reduced the transportation distance between its U.S. fulfillment centers and customers by nearly 10% compared to the same period in 2023. This regionalization ensures faster deliveries by placing products closer to customers.

3. Machine Learning to Optimize Inventory
Leveraging advanced machine learning algorithms, Amazon has improved its inventory management. The technology predicts product demand more accurately and ensures items are stocked closer to customers. As a result, more orders can be fulfilled from a single local site, reducing transportation time. This effort also led to an increase in the average number of items per box, further cutting down delivery trips.

Benefits for Sellers and Prime Members
The majority of the 5 billion items delivered at record speeds were fulfilled on behalf of third-party sellers using Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) service. This enhancement not only benefits Prime members but also supports small and medium-sized sellers by providing them with faster and more efficient logistics solutions.

Commitment to Safety and Employee Well-being
As Amazon enhances its delivery speed, it remains committed to the safety of its employees and delivery partners. The company has invested over $750 million in safety technologies and training, resulting in a 28% improvement in its U.S. recordable incident rate from 2019 to 2023. This focus on safety ensures that employees can efficiently handle the increased volume of orders while maintaining a safe working environment.

Amazon's latest update reflects its commitment to improving the shopping experience for Prime members and helping sellers succeed through enhanced logistics. As the company continues to invest in machine learning, regionalized fulfillment, and expanded same-day delivery networks, customers can expect even faster, more reliable deliveries in the future.
