Amazon Shares Key Statistics That Show Its Economic Impact in the U.S. Over the Last 12 Years

Amazon, the global e-commerce and technology giant, has released a new report that highlights its economic impact in the U.S. over the last 12 years.

The report, titled "7 Key Stats That Help Explain Amazon's Economic Impact in the U.S." , showcases how Amazon has contributed to the national gross domestic product (GDP), created millions of jobs, supported small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) etc.

The report by Holly Sullivan, Vice President of Worldwide Economic Development at Amazon claims that
Amazon contributed more than $880 billion to the national GDP since 2010, and directly invested more than $240 billion in the U.S. in 2022 alone.

The report also says that Amazon is the second largest private employer and the largest job creator in the U.S., with nearly 1 million U.S. employees and an average hourly pay of over $20.50 for customer fulfillment and transportation roles. The report states that close to half of the people Amazon hires for its logistics jobs were previously unemployed.

The report also highlights Amazon’s efforts to help its employees and sellers grow their careers and businesses. The company offers a program called Amazon Career Choice, which covers up to 95% of tuition and fees for eligible employees to pursue education and training in high-demand fields. More than 100,000 U.S. Amazon employees have benefited from this program, expanding their job options and earning power.

Additionally, the company supports more than 500,000 small and medium-sized businesses that sell on Amazon, generating an estimated 1.5 million additional jobs across the country.

Amazon’s investments also have a positive spillover effect on the local retail sector, according to the report. Communities that Amazon invests in see an average increase of 900 local retail jobs, as the company’s presence attracts more customers and businesses to the area.

Holly Sullivan, Vice President of Worldwide Economic Development at Amazon says, "We work closely with the communities where we invest to understand their needs, from infrastructure to talent attraction and workforce development programs, that will help drive new opportunities."

The report by Amazon showcases the company's significant economic impact in the U.S., both at the national and local levels. By investing in infrastructure, job creation, education, and small business support, Amazon has demonstrated its commitment to being a positive force for the communities where it operates. The company's economic development team works closely with the local leaders and stakeholders to understand their needs and create new opportunities for everyone living there. Amazon's report is a testament to its vision of being Earth's most customer-centric company, as well as a responsible corporate citizen.
