Amazon has announced changes to its Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) Liquidations and Donations programs, effective September 30, 2025. The update, shared on Seller Central, will impact how unsold and unfulfillable inventory is managed in the US and Canada. These changes are part of Amazon’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and maximize value recovery for sellers.

FBA Liquidations becomes default option
The FBA Liquidations program, which helps sellers recover value from unsold inventory by reselling through secondary markets, will now become the default choice for eligible items. Sellers who haven’t set up their automated fulfillable and unfulfillable inventory settings will be automatically enrolled. However, participation is not permanent—sellers will still have the option to opt out at any time if they prefer alternative solutions.

FBA Donations program becomes mandatory
The FBA Donations program, which ensures eligible products are donated to charitable organizations instead of being recycled or discarded, will become mandatory. Beginning September 30, 2025, sellers will no longer have the option to opt out. Those who had previously opted out will be re-enrolled automatically. This change strengthens Amazon’s commitment to sustainability by ensuring that useful products continue to benefit communities.

No fee changes for sellers
Amazon clarified that there will be no changes to fees for either program. The focus remains on improving efficiency and minimizing waste, rather than adding financial burden on sellers. This means sellers can continue to benefit from liquidation recovery and charitable contributions without incurring additional costs.

While no immediate action is required, Amazon recommends that sellers review their FBA settings and inventory management strategies before September 30, 2025. Understanding how liquidations and donations will affect unsold inventory is crucial for planning ahead and making informed decisions.

The upcoming changes to the FBA Liquidations and Donations programs mark another step in Amazon’s push toward sustainability and responsible inventory management. With liquidations becoming the default and donations becoming mandatory, sellers in the US and Canada will see smoother processes for managing excess inventory while contributing to broader environmental and social goals.
