Amazon has announced that Rufus, its generative AI-powered shopping assistant, is now available to all U.S. customers through the Amazon Shopping app. This expansion marks a significant step in Amazon's efforts to enhance the online shopping experience using artificial intelligence. Earlier on February 1, 2024, the company officially announced the launch of "Rufus" and its availability to select Amazon customers across the US.
What is Rufus?
Rufus is a conversational AI assistant designed to help customers make more informed purchase decisions. It can answer a wide range of shopping-related questions, from product specifics to broader queries about shopping trends and needs.
In an official blog, Rajiv Mehta, Vice President of Search and Conversational Shopping at Amazon, explains, "Rufus is designed to help customers save time and make more informed purchase decisions by answering questions on a variety of shopping needs and products right in the Amazon Shopping app—it's like having a shopping assistant with you any time you're in our store."
How Customers Are Using Rufus
Since its introduction, Rufus has fielded tens of millions of questions from customers. Here are some key ways shoppers are utilizing the AI assistant:
1. Understanding Product Details: Customers can ask specific questions about products, such as "Is this coffee maker easy to clean and maintain?" or "Is this mascara a clean beauty product?"
2. Getting Recommendations: Rufus provides product suggestions based on customer needs. Mehta shared an example: "One customer recently said they asked Rufus about a pool umbrella recommendation for Florida, and Rufus shared facts about Florida's weather, humidity, and suggested umbrella features."
3. Comparing Options: Shoppers can Rufus to quickly compare features across different products.
4. Accessing Order Information: Customers can easily track their packages or review past orders by asking questions like "Where is my order?" or "When was the last time I ordered sunscreen?"
5. Answering General Shopping Questions: Rufus can help with broader queries like "What do I need to make a soufflé?" or "What do I need for a summer party?"
How to Access Rufus

To start using Rufus, U.S. customers need to ensure their Amazon Shopping app is up-to-date. They can then tap the Rufus icon (chat bubbles with sparkle) in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to begin a conversation.

The Legacy Behind the Name
Interestingly, the name "Rufus" has a special significance in Amazon's history. It pays homage to a Welsh corgi that was one of Amazon's first "employees." This dog roamed the company's first warehouse, attended meetings, and became a beloved figure in Amazon's early corporate culture, helping to establish Amazon's dog-friendly policies that continue to this day.
While Mehta acknowledges that "it's still early days for both generative AI and Rufus," the company is excited about the positive customer feedback. As Amazon continues to refine and expand Rufus's capabilities, it aims to further streamline and enhance the online shopping experience for its customers.
This launch represents a significant step in the integration of AI technology into e-commerce, potentially setting new standards for personalized shopping assistance in the digital age.
